GREENCASTLE - An Antrim Township mini-mart owner who has been the victim of several recent burglaries shot an intruder during a confrontation early Thursday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Merlony Colaco, 29, has seen his Molly Pitcher Mini-Mart at 13640 Molly Pitcher Highway burglarized more than half a dozen times since March.

Colaco has owned the store for a year and a half. The first year was relatively tranquil, but in March the establishment was robbed four times in 14 days. In one incident, Colaco held a woman at bay with a gun until police arrived.

On Thursday at 1:46 a.m., Colaco pulled the trigger when Thomas Philip Candeloro Jr. allegedly approached him after breaking in a side door.

“I shot him because he was coming at me,” said Colaco this morning. “I didn't shoot him because he was stealing the cigarettes.”

Colaco said he has never shot a gun in his life and believes his actions were in self-defense.

Candeloro, 44, of Baltimore is listed in critical but stable condition in Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore. His two companions made off with 58 cartons of cigarettes estimated at $2,600, which they hauled off in a trash can, according to Colaco.

"Asked whether Colaco's shooting has been deemed justifiable self-defense, Dick said the investigation is continuing."

Self defense is always justifiable.

This guy was being terrorized by hoodlums. He needs an armed guard, or sell the store.

He owns a gun and has never fired it before? Get some training, ASAP!

The usual quality of the libtard press reporting on anything involving self protection and firearms. Do any of these mental idjits even know the difference between a "burglary" and a "robbery". If so, they certainly don't know how to write a simple, intelligible story about either one.

But I do love the outcome, and hope the owner isn't charged, and does get some range time.

And we can thank the government for setting the price of a carton of cigs at $44.83 each -which makes it SO beneficial to steal them in the first place.

But, I’d be willing to bet that the enemedia will report something about this story like, “Desperate smokers risk lives for their fix,” to put the blame on everything except where it belongs.

You're correct. And there is a large contigent of FReepers that will agree with the spin of the enemedia.

Thanks for all of your pings, Dave. “Enemedia”...I’ve seen it before but had forgotten about it. Good term. So many times it is the most accurate description. Thanks for mentioning it.

"He did Good, but he needs to do some Target-Practicing!"

Additional target practice is always good, that would allow for using a tighter choke in the shotgun.

I want to join those thanking you for the ping

And YEAH, if you own a gun, take it to the range, for crying out loud!

AND my personal opinion is that anybody who names a store "The Molly Pitcher Mini-Mart", is so offending the gods of good taste that he'd better expect bad Karma. Of course, on the Karmic scale, his decision NOT to call it Ye Olde Molly Pitche Mini Marte" is probably why things aren't worse for him.
