t's a short list, but Latina actress Maria Conchita Alonso has earned her place on it. Alonso is officially--at least on this issue--one of the saner minds in Hollywood.

CARACAS, Venezuela - Hollywood star Sean Penn applauded President Hugo Chavez as the Venezuelan leader lambasted the Bush administration and demanded an end to war in Iraq.
Chavez met privately with Penn for two hours Thursday, praising the actor as "brave" for urging Americans to impeach President Bush.

"In the name of the peoples of the world, President Bush, withdraw the troops from Iraq. Enough already with so much genocide," Chavez said before an auditorium packed with his red-clad supporters.
Penn sat near the front, at times applauding and nodding in agreement. He is the latest in a series of celebrities who have visited Caracas, including actor Danny Glover and singer Harry Belafonte.
Chavez said he and Penn discussed the question of "why the (U.S.) empire attacks Chavez so much," saying Venezuela's oil wealth is a key reason.
He also said Washington is "afraid that the people of the United States will learn the real truth" about the situation in Venezuela, citing his social programs for the poor.
"If the people of the United States, those millions and millions of poor people ... if that nation realizes what is truly happening here, there would be a revolution in the United States," Chavez said, eliciting applause from Penn.
Some Chavez opponents were angered by Penn's visit.
Cuban-born actress Maria Conchita Alonso, who grew up in Venezuela, said Penn is lending support to a "totalitarian" leader who wants increasing control of society — a charge Chavez denies.
In a phone interview from her home in Beverly Hills, Calif., Alonso said although she respects Penn as an actor, she hopes he "comes to his senses and he realizes that he's being used."
Penn did not speak publicly. Chavez said the actor came wanting to learn about Venezuela.
"That man has opposed the war in Iraq with all his strength, and not only that, he went to Baghdad ... and now he comes here. He's going around touring the 'axis of evil,'" Chavez said with a chuckle.

Brava, Maria. It's well past time someone in Hollywood spoke out against this punk. She can keep hoping, though. Neither Jeff Spicoli, nor his alter ego Penn, will come to their senses.
Beauty AND brains. Maria Conchita Alonso was born in Cuba but grew up in Venezuela. She knows some things Sean Penn doesn't. Not every one in Hollywood is busy sucking up to totalitarian dictators. Yes she does and I salute her for that. As for Penn, he joins a digusting lot that have been enamoured with present and past tyrants in Cuba, Nicaragua and now Venezuela. Even the communist insurgents in El Savador found favor with the left in our nation.
Let’s face it, if the left in the United States could install a ‘Soviet Union’ type of government in the US, they’d gladly sacrifice the tens of millions of lives to do it.
Too bad the young support the entertainment industry to the degree they do. Unconnected with reality, they finance a lot of evil that that industry supports.
Too many people think you can separate reality from make believe as it applies to the entertainment industry. “Oh I don’t agree with them, but I sure like their performances.”
There are only so many movies a wealthy person will go to see. It is therefore in an actor’s best interest to see the wealth redistributed to millions of sheep who might actually spend it at the movie theater. And actors certainly don’t want the sheep distracted by wars and violence across the globe, reading and watching the news instead of going out and spending money on movies.
I think Hollywood’s political activism is nothing more than crass commercialism. Is it really any wonder that socialist dictators are Hollywood favorites ?

Do these Hollywood weirdos imagine that the poor of Venezuela whom they love so much would go along with their pet cause of "gay rights?" But Hollywood liberals always give the bumpkins of the Third World a free ride for their bumpkin-ness. It's always and only rural American (especially Southern) "white trash" that is expected to go along with this stuff.
Let the Hollywood lefties preach "gay rights" to the Venezuelan evangelicals who support Chavez and let's see how long they remain welcome there. Better yet, let them have the same compassion for poor American Fundamentalists without demanding that they change their religious beliefs.

I’ve always thought that she’s hot. It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like she might have had some work on the face (unfortunately). I haven’t seen her in a new project in a while, I wonder why?.
OK, if Vanezuela is wonderful, why ate people NOT lining up to live THERE? If the US is so evil, why do so many people wants to come HERE? BRAVA Ms Alonso!
She also starred with Sean Penn in the Movie Colors , she played Sean Penn’s girlfriend in that Movie.

Maria Conchita Alonso has now earned Olberman’s “Worst Person in the World” award for next Monday.
we can only hope that sean penn will move there, or at least buy a “second home”
