Road rager defence rejected (Beat up 87 year old WW2 Vet)
The Daily Telegraph ^ | August 1, 2007 | Rhett Watson

A CLAIM by the girlfriend of a man accused of a brutal road rage attack on an 87-year-old that "half the Australian men would have done the same thing" has been resoundingly rejected in a Daily Telegraph online poll.

Martin Bruce Gamman, 33, was hiding in his southwestern Sydney home yesterday, six days after allegedly punching war veteran Tom Golden several times in the face during a traffic incident.

Showing little of the bravado he is accused of displaying last week, he refused to reveal himself when confronted by The Daily Telegraph. It was up to his partner - the mother of his three-month-old son - to leap to his defence.

"We knew he was elderly but we didn't know he was 87," said the girlfriend, who would not reveal her name.

"It's not like he had it written on his car, 'Australian veteran'."

Yesterday his girlfriend said it was simply a case of self defence and claimed Mr Golden twice almost caused an accident with their car.

"The media has made Marty look like some savage," she said. "It's not like he goes out every day and bashes someone. He reacted on instinct.

"I thought I was going to die at one stage (during the traffic incident).

"Half the Australian men would have done the same thing if their child and partner had been in that situation."

However in an online poll today Daily Telegraph readers have overwhelmingly rejected the woman's claim that half the nation's men would act the same.

Of 3,841 votes by just after midday, a massive 95.7 per cent of respondents had agreed that the girlfriend's statement was "a disgusting thing to say".

Police have charged Gamman with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm and predatory driving.

Parramatta Local Court heard on Saturday the truck driver had...

Kinda reminds one of Elizabeth Edwards being the one to “confront” critics of her husband, doesn’t it?

I got tickled when this broad made herself out to be a simpering little wifey, and mother, in need of her boyfriend’s protection. For all we know, she could look like a “truck driver” herself!

(What did they expect, for this little old fellow to have WAR VETERAN tattooed on his forehead? What nutters.)

Not enough details... to make a decision here. If an old man tries to run me off the road with my family in the car/truck... well I might give him a knuckle sandwich too.

I have been ran off the road by an old lady once.. I topped an hill and she was in the middle of the road. I ran into the ditch in the nick of time and turned around to give whoever it was a beating. I made it back about a half mile and this old lady was pulled over on the side of the road.. I pulled up beside her and saw she was old, she rolled down her window and in the sweetest of voices said “I so very sorry about that”..

I just waved and smiled and drove off. Wonder if her name was “Dot” like the fellows wife in the article.

Police evidence tendered in court revealed Gamman told detectives "I was going to f**king kill him but, when I realised he was an old pr**k, I gave him a couple and I left."

More attention to those cases and public education for quickly identifying such cowardly trash will get it off of the roads. Such criminals intend to attack older/smaller/unarmed victims and run away.

The weekend court hearing was told Gamman "snapped" after a near-collision with Mr Golden's car at Campbelltown on Thursday.

In an interview with detectives, Gamman said he stopped Mr Golden from driving away by skidding in front of him, "How police do it . . . the crazy police videos you see on TV."

Give this guy a couple of tours of "community service".

Mrs. Grilock and I were nearly killed by an 85-year-old who ran through a red light completely unaware and caught me right behind the door handle. I was fine, but My Favorite Liberal had a nasty bump on the head. The car was totaled.

The guy was clearly not competent to drive. Four lanes of traffic were stopped in his direction, and he blew though the fifth lane saying he didn’t see the red light, which had been red for a good thirty seconds. I had every right to be furious at the man.

But he was 85. I didn’t punch him. I didn’t even speak to him harshly. In fact, I went out of my way to make sure he was all right. (He was driving the Mother Of All Buicks and I was driving a Honda Civic, so he hardly felt the impact)

I did tell the police officer, though, that he should note in his report that this fellow should probably not have a license, to which the police officer concurred.

2nd Amendment would have stopped this animal DEAD in his tracks. Too bad they can’t even own a gun!

What a tough guy: punching an 87 year old man. And his girlfriend/mother of his child is an obnoxious, loud-mouth piece of work. They make a wonderful couple. Their child will really be learning some valuable life lessons from them.

I would have to know more about the situation before I passed judgment upon this 33 year old guy. If the 87 y/o was being belligerent and driving aggressively, he deserved a punch in the face, old man or not. There is no difference between a 33 year old or an 87 year old trying to kill you or injure you with an automobile. I see older aggressive drivers often driving dangerously and attempting to bully their way through traffic. Like feminists, once confronted, they rely upon the excuse of their sex and this case possibly, their advanced age.

Oh my gosh, I don’t know where I’ve seen so many levels of moral (and other) idiocy in so few paragraphs.

I’m not 87, but young thugs today from late genX and all of genY seem to have little compunction dusting up with guys their daddies age.

I think many of them never had daddies so they have issues with the concept in general.

Beating up old febble men is so for sissies.
like picking a fight with a 3 year old....sometimes.

there are some old guys fight well

I woulda never hit a man my dad’s age back in my youth unless he attacked me

"there are some old guys fight well"

Hell, some of us are too damned old to get involved in a fist fight......
Beside -- any sonuvabitch that physically assaults me or attempts to rob me, is going to pay a much higher price than a broken nose, or black eye....

Mr. Kimber and I go where we please, when we please with little concern...

The same thing happened to me. I was sitting at a red light, waiting for the oncoming traffic to go through the intersection, when a little old man in a Cadillac Fleetwood blew through the red light (he'd passed out from low blood sugar), t-boned a Lincoln Towncar, and then flew sideways into the side of my Ford Explorer. The impact was hard enough to throw my SUV sideways a full car-width.

I'm just thankful that he didn't come through about five seconds later, because the next car in line was my grandfather's little Chrysler New Yorker and he was in the passenger seat. If he'd been hit, I would have been going to a funeral later on that week.

Since I have become aged and not as capable of defending myself, as when I was thirty, I fear for my life from crazies like Mr. Gamman. Confronted with the same set of circumstances, I would inform them that I fear for my life, now back off. Hopefully it will end there. I carry an extra clip, just in case.
