FORWARD OPERATING BASE SALERNO, Afghanistan, July 31, 2007 — A class of nearly 20 young Afghan boys and their instructors took an unusual route for their class trip July 25. Escorted by members of the Polish Army, the class boarded a CH-47 Chinook helicopter from Waza Khawa in Paktika province, to the Black Sea and finally to Warsaw, Poland, for a couple of weeks.

"It's not everyday we have the opportunity to meet the younger population of Afghanistan and share with them the same view of this country we have from the sky."
U.S. Army Capt. Adam Bock

The Polish government suggested such a field trip with hopes to build a stronger relationship between not only the Polish Army, but also the country of Poland and the Afghanistan population.

Company A, 1st Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment, provided transportation for a portion of the field trip from Waza Khawa to Bagram Airfield. The class flew on an airplane to the Black Sea for the remainder of the trip.

The crew members had the opportunity to meet the class and instructors during the aircraft refueling.

of this country we have from the sky,” said Army Capt. Adam Bock, platoon leader for 1-158th Aviation Regiment

When the engines cranked, the young passengers quickly pressed down on their ear protection and shouted at one another. Their eyes widened with excitement when they watched the aircraft lift off the landing pad from the rear opening of the helicopter. A “thumbs up” for reassurance was given by their Polish escorts as the helicopter reached a higher altitude. The flight lasted nearly an hour.

“The young boy sitting in the jump seat near the pilots was quite the trooper, uncertain at first, but [kept a] smile on his face throughout the flight,” said Bock.

After landing at Bagram Airfield, the group showed their gratitude for the escort and waved farewell to the flight crew as they dismounted the helicopter. They were greeted by additional members of the Polish Army to continue their adventure.

“They all seemed to enjoy the trip, and we were more than happy to provide the opportunity for them to see how beautiful their country is,” said Sgt. 1st Class James Fleming, flight engineer for 1-158th Aviation Regiment

That was uncalled for, not funny, and in very poor taste.

Couple of things, I am sure the military frisked the kids for bombs.

Secondly, wonder if there will be a follow up to this story about some of the kids being killed by the Taliban for engaging with the enemy.
