He will go down in history as the guy who called the victims of September 11 little Eichmannsa reference to the notorious Nazi bureaucrat who helped ship hundreds of thousands of Jews to concentration camps. Ward Churchills comment, included in a long-forgotten essay dug up by an enterprising journalism student, stirred a national debate about the power of unpopular wordsand the proper consequences for those who use them.
But the saga of the tenured University of Colorado ethnic studies professor grew more complicated in 2006, after allegations surfaced that Churchill had plagiarized, falsified or misrepresented some of his other scholarly work (Churchill denies any wrongdoing). An investigation was launched, and a panel of peers pored over his work. By May 2006, the panel had reached some damning conclusions, saying some of Churchills questionable writings fell into the category of academic misconduct. But the five-person panel was split on whether Churchill should be fired. That didnt stop University of Colorado President Hank Brown from recommending to the schools elected Board of Regents that Churchill, an extremely popular teacher on campus, be terminated. On Tuesday, the Board voted 8 to 1 to do just that.
Churchill calls his dismissal nothing short of a free-speech witch hunt. Brown calls Churchills criticism a smoke screen. The battle isnt over. The morning after his firing, the professor filed a lawsuit in Denver district court, saying his dismissal was retaliatoryand a violation of his free speech. He spoke with NEWSWEEKs Jim Moscou about what he calls the conspiracy against himand explains why he still stands by the phrase that struck hard at the countrys soul.
NEWSWEEK: Any regrets over calling 9/11 victims little Eichmanns?

He is considered a "scholar" entirely because he isn't qualified to be anything else. For the most part, the only faculty in academia who generally score lower on standardized tests than the Education Department is the "[fill in your favorite underrepresented minority] Studies Department". Frankly, if they were qualified to do anything useful, they would have left the academy long ago.
Of course, there are some good professors out there, but very, very few of them are in the Education or [fill in your favorite underrepresented minority] Studies Departments.
Don’t forget the thousands of little Maoist’s from the 60’s who moved on from their campus protests to tenured professor.
The rot is so extensive I don’t think there is a cure.
Care to elaborate? I'm guessing if most of your daily public speaking was videotaped, enterprising folks who didn't particularly like "bluefish" could make a hilarious compendium of your gaffes, hesitations and malaprops over the course of a couple of weeks.
President Bush is a fine speaker. I've seen him live, up close and extemporaneous. You're just promoting a mainstream media mantra that isn't even close to the truth.
Don't be just another tool of the MSM.
Sorry, I knew somebody would misinterpret that.
What I meant to say was that Churchill is supposed to be a professor. If he was a legitemate one, he would speak well. He should be used to giving daily lectures. W is is chastised daily for his public speaking skills, yet Churchill is much worse.
Regardless, Bush still make me cringe at times. I’ve seen him do well, but he is great at gaffs too. I tend to overlook most of them, or find them endearing on most of the subject matter.
Yeh, you can say that. But, you can also say that Newsweek gave WC 5 pages to demonstrate what a babbling, incoherent idiot he is and to demonstrate that, for some people, it is possible to lose a debate even when they are talking to themselves.
Newsweek gives a five page look into this sick mind? They have an agenda. Who needs Newsweek? Fire them as well. The only interest I have here is in noting what effect the story might have on the deluded masses.

In the first week of March, 2005, Churchill was accused of plagiarizing the works of professor Fay G. Cohen of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.
Officials at Dalhousie sent the University of Colorado an internal 1997 report detailing allegations about an article Churchill wrote. "The article . . . is, in the opinion of our legal counsel, plagiarism," Dalhousie spokesman Charles Crosby said in summarizing the report's findings.
Dalhousie began an investigation after professor Cohen complained that Churchill used her research and writing in an essay without her permission and without giving her credit. Although the investigation substantiated her allegations, Cohen didn't pursue the matter because she felt threatened by Churchill, Crosby said. Crosby said Cohen told Dalhousie officials in 1997 that Churchill had called her in the middle of the night and said, "I'll get you for this."
The University of Colorado, embarrassed by extending tenure to a non-Ph. D., plagiarist, forger and fraud, are reviewing Churchill's controversial writings and questions have arisen about the quality of his work.
Notably absent in that report was any reference to at least five people who have said Churchill threatened them, including an Indian activist who says he spit on her and a former journalism professor who says he threatened her over a dispute about what to name a dorm.
The newest complaint to surface involves a former staff member who asked Churchill to shut his office door while smoking. She shut the door when Churchill smoked and he "proceeded to chase me all the way up to the second floor screaming obscenities at me."
The new complaints were included in more than 150 pages of documents released in April, 2005, that stemmed from the preliminary investigation into whether Churchill should be disciplined.
Most recently, Ward Churchill's claim of membership in the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians has been described as fraudulent, according to a scathing statement released by the tribal office.
The statement, issued May 9, 2005, in the name of the tribal leader, Chief George Wickliffe, and posted on its Web site Tuesday, does not mince words:
"The United Keetoowah Band would like to make it clear that Mr. Churchill IS NOT a member of the Keetoowah Band and was only given an honorary 'associate membership' in the early 1990s because he could not prove any Cherokee ancestry."
The tribe said that all of Churchill's "past, present and future claims or assertions of Keetoowah 'enrollment,' written or spoken, including but not limited to; biographies, curriculum vitae, lectures, applications for employment, or any other reference not listed herein, are deemed fraudulent by the United Keetoowah Band."

I long for the old days when you could just shoot them and take their scalp.
Perhaps because you MADE IT UP.
I guess an “ethics” professor calling 9/11 victims “little eichmans” wasn’t enough to fire him.
And the people who made this "decision" are being held to account HOW? (Oh, thats right. Government bodies don't have to answer to the people for their screw ups. Just evil corporations.)
Sorry buddy, you fouled your own little nest and lowered the local warren property values.
this a-hole calls 9/11 victims little eichmans....and the lib/dems call it free speech...
a college student flushes a koran down the toilet....and the lib/dems call it a hate crime!!!!
due to the lib/dems and their judicial appointments....the US is rapidly circling the bowl!!!!
It is hardly 5 *real* pages. The entire article could have been formatted on a single page. It is amazing the stuff this guy spouts.
“”””Ira Hays ,a native American who was vastly superior to Ward Churchill””””
Yes he was!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ira_Hayes
Ira Hamilton Hayes (January 12, 1923 January 24, 1955) was a Akimel Oodham, or Pima Indian, and an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Community. A veteran of World War II’s Battle of Iwo Jima, Hayes was trained as a Paramarine in the United States Marine Corps (USMC), and became one of five Marines, along with a US Navy corpsman, immortalized in the iconic photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima.[1] [2]
Oh, no, not forgetting them..... someone wrote a book titled Poisoned Ivy back in 1982 about how the toadstools got tenure at Dartmouth. The author was one of the guys who co-founded The Dartmouth Review that the college Marxists kept trying to kick off campus. The founders turned it over in 1981 to a new, incoming editor named (small world) Dinesh D'Souza. D'Souza had a blonde freshman staffer the next fall named Laura Ingraham -- Laura was great, she wrote stories that drove them nuts. She even had a black Marxist music prof thundering on her dormitory door one afternoon, scared Laura's roomie silly (Laura wasn't even there, lol). Guy made a complete fool of himself, it was classic.
Bill Bennett was talking to an interviewee just this morning about how the liberals lost it in the 60's, caved in to the Marxists and Stalinists. Back in the day, old Hubert Humphrey cleaned a few Communists out of some labor unions (as did George Meany of the AFL-CIO) when he was coming up -- as Ronald Reagan did at SAG, about the same time -- but after Jack Kennedy was killed, and especially after Bobby got killed, the liberals just lost their perspective. They were so concerned about pinning Jack's (and Bobby's!) murders on "right-wing racists", in the face of abundant evidence that one assassin was a Communist and the other was an Arab Nationalist, that they just lost their perspective and allowed themselves to be turned into anti-American trolls. (And if you don't think the KGB Active Measures crowd had something to do with that, I've got a bridge I'd like to show you.)
Churchill’s BS and MS degrees came from a now defunct Illinois college. The school award degrees for attending classes; no written tests, papers or thesis were required.
