The American people did not vote to stop it. Republican Senators did. Something you knee jerk haters, with your non stop Democrat Party propaganda ranting, might want to consider rather then manufacturing the next excuse to mindlessly whine at the GOP.
First of all, Johnnie, I didn't say that American people "voted" against the "immigration reform bill", but it is clear to anyone who followed the "debate" in Congress that the reform bill (which was supported by a clear majority of Senators and Representatives, mainly Democrat, but with significant Republican support) was headed for passage before the American people hit the phone banks, the blogs and the opinion polls.
Now, as to the rest of your illogical ad hominem attack: since the "knee jerk haters" on the Democrat side were/are all in favor of amnesty, how much sense does it make to accuse someone who obviously strongly opposes amnesty of being a Left-Wing Democrat? Those Republican Senators who were, and remained, strongly opposed to amnesty ("the few, the proud") deserve our praise and respect. Those Republican Senators who changed with the political tide, deserve credit for finally showing common sense. But on the whole, it was public opinion, and not GOP backbone, that swayed the comprehensive immigration vote. At the end of the day, the defeat of comprehensive amnesty had more to do with Rush Limbaugh than with Mitch ("Blowin' in the Wind") McConnell.
