The dark side of the moon for Amtrak

~~~Snip~~~
No one at the 28th annual Mooning of Amtrak seems to know exactly why they pull down their pants every time a train goes by.
~~~Snip~~~

Exhibit A: Gramma Charleen Sandoval of Chino says this about her 10-year-old grandson who's mooning with her:

"He was practicing last night in front of the house."

They've almost got it right. If you're a tax payer, you're supposed to grab your ankles and bear down when Amtrak goes by because they are going to do what they've done every year for decades now.

I was wondering about the pointlessness of their “efforts” until I read that the practice started in Orange County, CA. LOL.....enough said.

CA - the butt of jokes for the entire nation.

Modern Interstate highways and airlines mortally wounded rail travel but obsolete bureaucracies decided to keep it on life support.

It’s cheaper to fly from Detroit to Chicago than to take Amtrack, even with the subsidies. Worse yet, even figuring in taxi / bus time between the train station in Detroit to the airport, then transportation between the Chicago airport and Union Station in Chicago, the airplane fare is still cheaper (or about the same price?) and much quicker.

One of the problems is that Amtrack must stop in every county seat to pick up passengers, if for no other reason than to appease the local politicians. This makes the train ride (otherwise a very nice trip) into a “milk run”.

Stop in every county seat? The lines I’m aware of only stop in major cities (and major tourist attractions, such as National Parks).

"It supposedly started 28 years ago in the Mugs Away Saloon when patron K.T. Smith vowed to buy a drink for anyone who'd cross the street and moon a train."

I'm shocked that mooning trains has it's origins with drunken bar patrons - who would have thunk?

It's amazing what people will do for a beer (or because of beer) LOL!

And that's the problem with a lot of transportation today. Most of the transportation options are in the cities. The rural areas get left out in the dust more often than not. In other words, the areas that could most use public transportation (the ones that would use it to get between small towns) are the ones that more often than not don't have it.

I hope you are joking.

Airports and highways are paid for with tax money - they get WAY more money than AMTRAK gets, by a huge factor.

Airlines in the US could not survive without government subsidies, nor could our road system.

Why do most people have no problem with billions of tax dollars going to the airline industry and the highways and then throw a fit when the railroads ask for their share?

Cut off all government funds for highways and airports and see how long they last without government support.

If it's good enough for the airport and the Interstate highways - its good enough for Amrak.

What does that sign on the fence say? Can’t read it by “moonlight.” The yellow tape, either.
