I think they were mistreated. I also believe that they mistreated others.

Was the book of Mormon plagiarized a good part from the Bible, yes or no?

Technically, I think the term you are looking for is "quoted". As in, "Was the book of Mormon quoted a good part from the Bible, yes or no?" I won't try to correct your grammar. The Book of Mormon does reference the passages from the Old and New Testament that are quoted.

As the people of the Book of Mormon came from Jerusalem, they had access to the writings of the Old Testament. As the resurrected Jesus Christ visited the people of the Book of Mormon, he gave them the same Gospel he preached in the New Testament.

Of course, the New Testament, in particular, the Savior, often quotes the Old Testament, so I'm sure that is not a problem for a Christian. :^)

"Actually, I find it fascinating. Of course, I love history."

I do find it fascinating myself. Unfortunately, it his "His Story" and in actuality, irrelevant to the actual coming real Presidential Campaign.

That is probably true.

But your answer seems to suggest some kind of moral equivalence, as if the Mormons were just as bad as the mobs who drove them out of Missouri and Illinois. Is that what you believe? And if so, what evidence can you offer to support your belief?

if someone is willing to buy "whole hog" into a religion that is based on on foundation of lies and deceit, you have to question their capacity to think clearly.

So, basically. what you are saying is that anyone who is a Mormon has diminished capacity for logical thought = because the Mormon Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints") is "based on a foundation of lies and deceit".

I take it you are an atheist? Or have you found a church with nothing in their history to question. If so, enlighten us.

If not, then my first assessment of your remarks still stands - you are judging a person on the 'sins' of their church....which would leave the majority of the worlds population with questionable 'capacity" including you - unless you an atheist...

"mistreated"?

How about men, women and babies slaughtered by a mob - an entire town attacked -

Oh good God! This is not rocket science! If the "FOUNDER" of the religion has been shown to have lied as to the basis of their "denominationation", then the whole foundation is ROT! We are not talking about some petty doctrinal issue hundreds of years later by some "adherent".

Oh, don't leave the atheists out of this. Atheists may have gotten a late start, but they have done their best in modern times to run up the body count. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, et al., were self-proclaimed atheists and mass murders all.

So do I blame all atheists for the crimes of a few? Of course not. Some of my closest and dearest friends are atheists who are good people by any standards.

I do not believe in collective guilt. Any large group of people is likely to contain its share of scoundrels.

My main argument is that the original article is ridiculously biased, casting Smith as vastly superior to Lincoln, if not Christ Himself.

Since I sincerely believe Smith was a horrible deceiver who created a false religion which led millions away from Christ, I obviously disagree with the article's glorification of him.

I know that no LDS member will agree with my perspective and that an argument on a political chat board will solve few if any differences. And that is why I have never posted a huge article promoting my religious beliefs in the guise of a political discussion.

It is your right to believe what you want. However, no one should be shocked or offended when others disagree.

Feel free to disagree. That’s why I didn’t post this as a “no flame” thread. I am merely pointing out that the main source of much of the anti-Mormon literature out there is the people who, in the 1840’s, fell away from the church, allied themselves with those who committed such horrific crimes against Mormons and indeed encouraged such atrocities. (In fact, they themselves coined the term “anti-Mormon”) Their motivations are certainly germane to the discussion.

And given that Mitt Romney can’t go anywhere without someone demanding he explain his religion’s views on some subject or another or that any post here on FR with the word “Romney” in the keywords never fails to attract the “Now I love Mormons but did you know they worship Satan” crowd, like it or not, it is an issue in the campaign. It shouldn’t be, but it is and therefore needs to be dealt with. Therefore, in fairness, a Mormon perspective must be heard and that is what I have provided.

My main argument is that the original article is ridiculously biased, casting Smith as vastly superior to Lincoln, if not Christ Himself.

Perhaps I read a different article than you did. As I recall, the article nowhere states that Smith was "vastly superior" to Lincoln, only that both faced similar difficulties over their antislavery stance. Moreover the article makes no mention of Jesus Christ at all. (No believing Mormon would suggest that Joseph Smith is superior to Jesus Christ.)

But even if that were your main argument, you actually wrote something else. When asked whether the Mormons were mistreated in Missouri and Illinois, you wrote

I think they were mistreated. I also believe that they mistreated others.
That seems to suggest that you believe the Mormons were as guilty as those who drove them out of Missouri and Illinois. Is that what you believe?

Lest no forget the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre. It also hurt the Mormons quite badly in the eyes of many
