I don’t trust Romney to vigorously defend the Second Amendment. His past statements and actions and his recent decision to join the NRA do not comfort me. Therefore, Romney will never receive my vote. The fact that he is a Mormon is of no concern to me.

I’m just looking for facts in support of his assertion that Romney is a “nutcase”.

Maybe Romney is a “nutcase” — I don’t know. But if someone makes such as assertion I would certainly hope there is a factual basis.

It should be pointed out that the source of the information you posted is in fact the very people who drove Mormons out of their homes in the dead of winter, tarred and feathered and murdered their men, women and children, burnt their homes and cities to the ground and finally murdered their prophet and called it “frontier justice”. FYI, the word of self-justifying, mass murders, in some corners of the world, is suspect at best.

It should be pointed out that the source of the information you posted is in fact LDS Living Magazine. Please don’t claim there is no bias in their ridiculously exaggerated hagiography of “the Prophet.”

Pray Congress to pay every man a reasonable price for his slaves out of the surplus revenue arising from the sale of public lands, and from the deduction of pay from the members of Congress.” .... . He wanted to reduce the number of congressmen to just two per state, and suggested Congress take no more pay than the hard working farmers, “who earn an honest living.”

Yep -that'd do it - get rid of Smith

BYW, I hardly expect an even treatment of the subject on a Catholic thread...why post it here, hmmmm

Let’s make it easier for ourselves: Don’t vote for Mitt Romney. We don’t need to be weighed down by this religion problem in 2008. And don’t vote for Rudy or McCain either, while you’re at it.

.Here’s a closer to factual history...

There once was a con man who made fools of a LOT of people. They followed his underlings to Utah. They were so bad the US government almost went to war with them. They killed everyone in a wagon train while pretending to be Indians after a while.

And he really hated his dog

Well there, by golly.

That's sure enough to deep-six him . He's guilty of anything done 150 years ago by members of the church. Yessir.

(So how do we elect Catholics and members of about any church if they are guilty of anything perpertrated by their church back through history? Think of the Inquisition that killed hundreds of thousands -

Your logic escapes me

Mobile Vulgus points to something the Mormons were said to've done - but wants to ignore the mob murdering of their men, women and children - little babies taken by their feet and brains bashed out on buildings.

Part of the motive was the successful farming of new lands, making them very desirable - anyway they could be taken

I have always wondered how serious Joseph Smith was about running for president. Did he really think he had a good chance of being elected? Or was his candidacy merely a means to get his ideas out in public?

I especially like his idea of freeing the slaves by buying them from their masters, using money from the sale of public land (and the reduction in the pay of Congress). It is too bad that slavery was not abolished peacefully in this country.

I’m not sure about that. I assume that he was serious but I also imagine that he was realistic about his chances of winning. I’d have to read up on that.

Since the source of the article is clearly posted above, it was mentioned. That the anti-Mormon propaganda being spread here was created by murderers, rapists and vandals is never pointed out by those who spread their stories.

Was Joseph Smith a delusional pathological liar, yes or no?

Did he have magic glasses, yes or no?

Was the book of Mormon plagiarized a good part from the Bible, yes or no?

If you are not willing to debate this questions seriously then don’t bother replying.

That's not the point. IT IS if someone is willing to buy "whole hog" into a religion that is based on on foundation of lies and deceit, you have to question their capacity to think clearly. I have known many Mormons who are the greatest people... but what I just said stands by itself.

Senator Smoot ... has been recognized over the years as one of the great senators in American history.

There is no mention of the Smoot-Hawley tariff which may have caused, certainly aggravated, the great depression. To be fair, it took many politicians to make that disastrous legislation into law.

Which group were the "murderers, rapists and vandals" again? Several theories disagree.

And if you are going to aggressively promote your religion on FR, please don't be shocked and offended when some disagree. Freedom of speech and religion are allowed.

Fair enough. But when you say that "several theories disagree," are you honestly suggesting that the Mormons were not mistreated in Missouri and Illinois?
