Pitt student critically injured when hit, dragged by [stolen] car [Thief was on probation]
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | June 30, 2007 | Jim McKinnon and Moustafa Ayad

The driver of a stolen car was speeding down the buses-only lane in Oakland at 70 mph Thursday night when he lost control, careened onto the sidewalk and struck a University of Pittsburgh graduate student who was dragged 50 feet under the chassis.

Jennifer Lynn Burroughs, 25, was in critical condition yesterday at UPMC Presbyterian after suffering a crushed pelvis, injuries to her skull and severe brain hemorrhaging.

The driver, Christopher Titus, 19, of Garfield, got out of the car and ran from the scene. He was apprehended by University of Pittsburgh police and was awaiting arraignment last night.

Mr. Titus was charged with aggravated assault, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, theft, two counts of reckless endangerment and receiving stolen property.

Police said the car, which was reported stolen in Highland Park on Wednesday, was traveling in the buses-only lane on Fifth Avenue

The vehicle had veered out of the way of an oncoming bus and struck a mailbox near where Ms. Burroughs was walking in front of the Pittsburgh Athletic Association building.

Ms. Burroughs, of Crafton, was dragged about 50 feet before the vehicle stopped and the occupants abandoned it, Lt. Kraus said.

According to a police affidavit, Mr. Titus told the passengers in the car he had been arrested before for stealing cars and did not want to go back to jail.

He lost control of the car and traveled onto the sidewalk before he hit Ms. Burroughs, who "came out of nowhere."

According to court records, Mr. Titus was arrested this year on charges of receiving stolen property and driving without a license.

He pleaded guilty in May and was sentenced by Common Pleas Judge Robert C. Gallo to 18 months' probation.

The only reason the judge gave probation to this convicted criminal was so he could break more laws, drive wrecklessly, and terribly injure an innocent person. The judge is just as bad as the criminal.

The article says the driver of the stolen car drove on to the sidewalk and hit a pedestrian, and he said the pedestrian "came out of nowhere." So the criminal is blaming the victim.

I hope this guy gets life in jail with no possibility of parole. And I hope the judge who gave him probation loses his job.

What I posted is only an excerpt. You have to read the entire article at the link to get the full meaning of how horrible this criminal and this judge are.

Criminal: 6 months in jail. A year tops. Judge: Keeps his cushy job, retires fat and happy on a nice publicly funded pension. Victim: Nobody gives a crap.

So the criminal is blaming the victim.

Yes, shame on her! Child of privilege, no doubt.

I hope the investigative reporters in Pittsburgh look at the same rap sheet the judge did when he set that piece of human debris free and let the public know what kind of justice they’re receiving from that judge. Chances are the judge will be run out of town.

That's my take on the judge, too. Wonder what the guy's rap sheet was when he was a juvie?

Three months for receiving stolen property, six months for eluding, three months for aggravated assault, three months for reckless endangerment, and LWOP for driving the in busses-only lane.

WHAT?!?!? They didn’t charge him for that?!?!?

No way. Pittsburgh is a lineral Democrat stronghold. They'll be mad that he allowed the police to arrest this poor victim of his situation.

Never happen in P'burgh. Maybe in some other town, but not here.

The judge can’t exceed the punishment that the law allows.

A lot of judges despise having to render judgments that do not appear to meet the crime.

People on this board would rightfully gripe about a judge who took the law into their own hands (then you get decisions like roe v wade).

And about their fat pensions, judges usually make much less than the lawyers who appear before them.

“I hope this guy gets life in jail with no possibility of parole.”

Perhaps it would be more appropriate for the criminal to face the same experience as his victim.

You can’t seriously believe that probation was the most severe penalty the judge could have applied.

Just because lawyers feast off a system tailored to reward them does not justify their wages either.

I hope this guy gets life in jail with no possibility of parole.

One can hope but from the charges against him in the article, doesn't seem he'll serve more than 7 years. If that.

Meanwhile, this poor student will be in the care of her parents for the rest of her life. If she lives

It’s impossible to describe the suffering the victim will experience as a result of the crushed pelvis, destruction of skin, and brain injury.
