“The overseas-trained doctors who work in our system are very good and every day they save the lives of Queenslanders, and without them we wouldn’t have a health system,” Mr Beattie said.

AMA statement

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has itself stepped in to urge people not be afraid of overseas-trained doctors.

AMA president Dr Rosanna Capolingua today defended the recruitment of internationally trained doctors to Australia, saying they were an invaluable part of the health system.

She said she understood there might be some anxiety about seeing foreign doctors following the questioning of two overseas-trained doctors in Australia over the thwarted terror attacks in London and Glasgow.

“It is a natural feeling for people to feel disturbed about what has happened and I am sure Australians, particularly ones who are just encountering an overseas-trained doctor and don’t have a relationship with them, that they will feel a little anxious,” Dr Capolingua told reporters in Adelaide.

“Overseas-trained doctors have been an essential part of our workforce for many years.

“I don’t want patients to be frightened to see their doctor.”

Well ya’ll just go ahead, I’ll just stick with my American doctors.

Eight suspects ‘have links to NHS’
Press Association
Wednesday July 4, 2007 4:53 AM

All eight people arrested in connection with car bomb attacks in London and Glasgow have links to the NHS.

Seven are believed to be doctors or trainee doctors while the one woman under arrest is a trained laboratory researcher.

A man arrested at Brisbane Airport on Tuesday was identified as Dr Mohammed Haneef, 27, who once worked at hospitals in Cheshire. Dr Haneef, 27, who was arrested at Brisbane Airport where he had been due to catch a flight on Monday night. One more man, also a doctor with links to Cheshire, is being questioned by police in Australia.

The doctor was named in Australian newspaper reports as Mohammed Asif Ali, a near neighbour of Dr Haneef. He has not been arrested. Details of the link between the arrested men and women and the medical profession sent shockwaves through the health industry. Dr Hamish Meldrum, of the British Medical Association, said: “Like others we were shocked to hear of the recent attempted bombings. The news that members of a caring profession may be involved in these atrocities was even more appalling.

Overseas doctors have made an invaluable contribution to the NHS over the years and it would be dreadful if the trust that exists between patients and doctors, whatever their background, was harmed by these events.” blah blah blah...

That’s 10 altogether so far, there might be more, depends on the intel recovered from phone records and computers...Australian police are apparently in possession of e-mails. They may be ‘doctors’ but they are muslim dimwits above all else...programmed killing robots.

The alleged bomber Bilal Abdulla, born in Aylesbury, England, and trained in medicine in his ancestral land of Iraq, was described as a key member of the gang Tuesday, as he was interrogated in London’s high-security Paddington Green police station, along with six of his colleagues. (Dr. Ahmed is in critical condition in hospital with burns, and is unable to speak.)

Friends described Dr. Abdulla as the son of secular and well-educated parents, a man who was considered an extreme and zealous believer in political Islam, whose beliefs alarmed even fellow extremists.

“He supported the insurgency in Iraq, he actively cheered the deaths of British and American troops in Iraq,” while he lived in Cambridge, England, with family members who worked at the university, his ex-roommate and former extremist Shiraz Maher told the BBC program Newsnight last night.

“And he also, which is quite unusual, supported the sectarian conflict, he actively supported the deaths of Shias at the hands of Sunnis. … He believed in the creation of an Islamic state, and in the imposition of sharia law in Iraq and eventually across the entire world.”

Dr. Abdulla, his friends say, was infuriated by what he saw as un-Islamic behaviour by Britons and especially by fellow Muslims – he once was so outraged by his roommate’s guitar playing that he threatened to behead him for playing music, which extremist Muslims consider sinful.

But months after returning from Iraq, Dr. Abdulla was practising medicine at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Scotland, as a diabetes specialist. His colleagues regarded him as aloof, unfriendly and not very committed to his work.

But British medical authorities said Tuesday that they cannot and will not do anything to prevent religious extremists from entering their employ.

The reason is simple: The British medical system, like Canada’s, is overwhelmingly dependent on foreign-trained doctors and nurses.

There are currently 80,000 foreign doctors employed in the National Health Service, many of them from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

“While doing all they can to prevent unsuitable people taking up employment in the NHS, employers also have a duty to look after the rights of their staff and this includes not discriminating against employees in any way on the grounds of their religion or belief,” the NHS said in a statement Tuesday.

MOBILE PHONE CARD

The Gold Coast Hospital registrar, recruited to Australia last year from Liverpool, England, has not been charged. He left his Internet access and mobile phone card with the British suspects before leaving for Australia, police sources said.

“We are hopeful that we’ll be able to clarify his situation in the course of the next 48 hours or so,” Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty told Australian television.

Keelty said a decision whether to charge, release or extradite Haneef would be taken by the end of the week. British police have not yet asked for his extradition.

But under tough Australian anti-terrorism laws introduced after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States but unused before this week, Haneef could be held without charge for up to 28 days if a court judge agrees.

“That has to be based on reasonable grounds, there’s a limit to what we can do here and that’s appropriate,” Keelty said.

Police have searched Haneef’s spartan apartment. His hospital employers said they were keeping his job open.

“He’s a fairly quiet doctor, very conscientious, and performed at a very high clinical standard and he is very well regarded by his colleagues and patients,” Gold Coast Health Service acting manager Brian Bell told Australian radio.

Haneef was given emergency leave on Monday because his pregnant wife was unwell, Bell said.

The Indian consul in Brisbane complained that he had been given very little information about Haneef, even passport and birth details, as police interrogation continued.

Keelty said a second doctor hauled in for questioning had been released, with no evidence of his involvement in the international investigation.

Prime Minister John Howard said Australia’s overall terrorism threat warning level would not be increased from the current “medium”, despite Haneef’s detention.

“There is nothing about the circumstances about the Australian connection, if I can call it that, with what has happened in the United Kingdom,” he said.

well, religious extremist doctors are no different from religious extremist pilots, truck/taxidrivers/baggage handlers/dentists/psychologists...etc. They are muslims. Any one of whom just might take it into their allah-soaked dimwitted minds to kill the filthy infidel. Let us not forget, the vehicle set up to explode outside the Tiger Tiger nightclub was the venue for a 'girl's night out' they wanted to kill women, to teach 'the sluts' a lesson! Of course the British medical authorities cannot and will not prevent religious extremists from employment...because - THEY WOULD NEED TO NEVER EMPLOY A MUSLIM IN ANY CAPACITY WHATSOEVER!

One of his colleagues, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Evening Standard newspaper Tuesday: “Bilal spent a lot of time on Islamic or Arabic websites. I would question him about it because I thought it was a bit odd.”

But Abdulla’s answer had been that he was single, with no wife or children to spend time with.

‘Monsters hired gas from B&Q’

July 04, 2007

GAS canisters used in the London and Glasgow car bomb bids were picked up from B&Q, it was claimed last night.

Sources said the cylinders were believed to have been hired for £30 each from a branch of the DIY chain in Paisley — just outside Glasgow.

A B&Q spokeswoman said staff would record the name of the person hiring a cylinder before they could take it away.

Yesterday two men were arrested as they tried to collect a delivery of gas canisters from an industrial estate in Blackburn, Lancs.

Cops swooped on the Asian men after suppliers dropped off at least seven 6ft-long Calor gas bottles outside a unit.

Last night the pair — in their 30s or 40s — were being held on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act 2000.

Cameron Mason, who runs a firm on the Furthergate industrial estate, said: “Two men arrived to collect the canisters then an unmarked cop car turned up.”

Last night Calor said it is to review the way its gas is sold from stores.

Haneef was given emergency leave on Monday because his pregnant wife was unwell, Bell said.

Bell, methinks, is lying. Earlier reports stated Haneef left without notice, he was rostered to work and never showed up. I saw the landlord of his apartment interviewed, he said the police removed items...documents and papers. Haneef left in an awful hurry.

The hospital is emabarrassed, and so is the State Government, they will play this down, it's typical CYA.

"Bearing in mind the amount of media focus on this and the attention on the hospital, Queensland Health will need to talk through with him whether this is an appropriate place for him to actually practice medicine," Mr Beattie said.

if 'doctor' Ail is a muslim, then Queensland (or anywhere in Australia) is NOT an appropriate place for him to practice ANYTHING, least of all medicine.

AL-Qaeda's Abu Musab al-Zarqawi may have ordered the bombers to go to Britain as a 'sleeper cell'

MI5 knew four of the bomb plotters

As many as four of the NHS terror cell suspects were already known to security services, it emerged last night.

Reports in the U.S. yesterday said key members of the NHS cell were recruited more than two years ago by terror mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed in Iraq last year.

In an extraordinary piece of advance planning - a trademark of Al Qaeda - they were sent to Britain as 'sleepers' to await orders.

Zarqawi, who became head of Al Qaeda in Iraq and personally beheaded British hostage Kenneth Bigley, wanted men of an entirely different profile to the 'homegrown' July 7 bombers.

The reports came as investigators focused on Dr Bilal Abdulla, one of seven men and a woman under arrest. He was one of the two men who drove a blazing Jeep into an entrance of Glasgow Airport on Saturday.

Bilal Abdulla has been transferred to Paddington Green high-security prison in London as the investigation continues

The 28-year-old, the son of a leading Iraqi rheumatologist, arrived in Britain last August and took a job at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

In Iraq he was a member of the extreme Sunni Wahabist sect, which is aligned with Al Qaeda. Fellow medical students in Baghdad described him as 'deeply religious' with 'extreme views of Islam'.

Dr Abdulla, who was under investigation at the hospital because of his use of radical websites while on duty, lived in London for a time in 2003 before returning to Baghdad to complete his studies.

Investigators are trying to establish his contacts in London and whether he was a visitor to the Finsbury Park mosque, which has been linked to other Al Qaeda attacks.

In Australia, the Gold Coast doctor arrested at Brisbane Airport over alleged links to UK terror attacks continues to be questioned by Federal Police.

It has emerged that he told colleagues he was leaving the country to be with his wife and baby.

Gold Coast Hospital colleagues of Mohamed Haneef, 27, said the junior doctor was “in a hurry to get home” and used the birth of his child as a reason to be excused from duties.

Australian Federal Police investigators last night were also questioning Haneef’s former Liverpool flatmate and Gold Coast Hospital colleague Dr Mohammed Asif Ali. It was reported this morning that Haneef had left a laptop with his Dr Ali. But this morning AFP chief Mick Keelty revealed he had been released and was unlikely to face further action. To read more about this, click here.

When Haneef was arrested by a joint AFP and Queensland Police Service operation on Monday night - becoming the eighth person arrested in relation to last week’s British terror attacks - he had a one-way ticket to India.

The Australian newspaper reported that he had not been granted leave from work.

Six of the eight suspects are doctors of a similar age to Haneef - the perfect cover, experts said yesterday, for terrorists operating in Western nations.

AFP investigators are believed to have found correspondence and evidence of telephone communication between Haneef and some of the British suspects.

Raids were yesterday carried out at Gold Coast Hospital and several southeast Queensland addresses, including Haneef’s Southport unit. Police seized items but would not confirm their nature.

Police allege Haneef was ``connected to a terrorist group’’, Commissioner Keelty said yesterday, while Ali was helping them with inquiries.
