China calls U.S. blocking of its seafood imports indiscriminate and unacceptable

The Associated Press
Published: June 29, 2007

BEIJING: China called a U.S. block on its seafood 'indiscriminate' and 'unacceptable' and urged closer cooperation on food safety between the two trading partners, state media said Saturday.

"China cannot accept the indiscriminate and automatic detention of four kinds of Chinese seafood by the United States," Li Changjiang, the head of China's top quality watchdog, was quoted as saying.

Li made his comments late Friday during a telephone conversation with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday it would detain Chinese catfish, basa and dace, as well as shrimp and eel after repeated testing turned up contamination with drugs that have not been approved in the United States for use in farmed seafood.

U.S. officials said there have been no reports of illnesses or evidence to suggest the products pose any immediate health risk. They stopped short of ordering a ban on the fresh and frozen seafood.

OK.....then we will just ban all food, medication and toiletries from china. Then we can discuss slave labor and other pirated products as well.

I've suddenly lost my appetite for seafood from China. Looks like they'll have to poison their own citizens!

The only way there could be such “cooperation” is for there to be a practical means to hold the sources of the bad food to accountability. China can’t do that. So we gotta 100% test.

I gotta say though...their shrimp has a nice flavor.
Kind of a cross between mercury and anti-freeze. You just can’t find it in the states.

But China can’t give us that twang of illegal alien poop, either, so there.

Gee, I didn’t eat Chinese seafood when I lived in China. Seems like a no-brainer not to eat it here in the United States.

I believe the official translation said, “Why don’t you all go suck on a Thomas the Tank Engine toy, swallow some of our toothpaste, and drive on our tires.”

China is a cesspool of corruption. We shouldn’t even trade with them for at least 100 years.

When I first saw farmed Chinese seafood I naively assumed they were farming in open ocean corrals. Now we see this is more like something raised in Manhattan sewers.

No one’s gonna buy it if it’s toxic, what are they whining about? Being banned is doing them a favor.

For the same reasons that things made in China cost so much less, things made in China are unregulated and unknown.

Do you want the 99-cent fish fillet or the $4 fish fillet? One of them is known and regulated. One is not. One is grown in water full of sewage and toxins. Hmm.
