Immigration Bill Failure Proves Rasmussen’s First Law of Politics
Rasmussen Reports ^ | June 28, 2007 | Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 06/28/2007 9:44:45 PM PDT by gpapa

Scott Rasmussen’s first law of politics is that America’s politicians aren’t nearly as important as they think they are. That law was clearly demonstrated earlier today when the United States Senate finally surrendered to the American people on immigration. Politicians may make things messy for a while, but over the long haul it is the American people who determine the nation’s fundamental policies.

Yep. If the American people don't want something, the politicians ultimately have to desist or they pay the price by losing their jobs at election time. So this event has awakened Americans by showing them they CAN make a difference even when the political class is opposed to what they want. And that's a very good thing indeed.

Odd that as the reps go back to the Beltway, they think they are in the Club of Incumbancy. No thought of the BASE which ‘brung’ them to the dance. My guess is, many GOP Rinos are going to face primary challenges this time. Some Dems who won House races , especially down South, are going to be challenged by conservPubs and they may take as many as 10 House seats back. Oh the Dems will still control Congress but the House will be closer. Now, we have to get the right Pub to defeat Her Highness.

“...supporters of the doomed legislation often stated that the status quo is unacceptable.”

I agree with this statement 100% and, for this reason, I say we should vote the incumbents out, a clean sweep. Get the career politicians out and put in a new group of Representatives and Senators, people who are prepared, willing and anxious to listen to their constituents.

this event has awakened Americans by showing them they CAN make a difference even when the political class is opposed to what they want.

They said that with the massive outpouring against the Dubai deal.

They said that with the massive outpouring against the Harriet Miers nomination.

They said that in November of 06, but many of the politicians didn't understand.

They said it by scrutinizing their House representatives' tabling the Senate's 2006 Amnesty for illegals bill.

They said it with the massive outpouring against the Senate's 2007, round 1, Amnesty for illegals bill.

They said it with the the masstive outpouring against the Senate's 2007, round 2, Resurrected Amnesty for illegals bill.

They will say it in 2008 by giving a remedial lesson to certain politicians who thought they were above the will their constituents.

I heard that Voinvich interview.

I bet several Senators are running for cover and hoping their state constituents have short memories. They are probably getting their impending forced retirement situations in order.

Lindsey Graham lost his dream of VP on the McCain ticket, since McCain also latched onto the amnesty monstrosity. Graham upset many people by his ‘bigot’ reference.

I don’t thiink the fight is over. We should continue to man the phones, faxes and emails until they enforce the laws already on the books. The way I read these polls, most Americans don’t buy the enforcement part. My “Sanctuary” town is still welcoming illegals, so until I see something being done about this I won’t get behind any immigration reform.

We should hound them everyday until they get the message. Enforcement Now!

I still think we need to determine why the powers that be were so adamant on forcing this issue in the face of overwhelming opposition? Is it the NWO? The NAU? What is it that would have them burn so much political capital, cut so many corners, and attempt to push this thru with minimal oversight or review?

Do we? 20 million illegals are still in our country. More continue to pour in every day. We all pay billions to provide these criminals with everything from schooling to medical care. Nothing is done to truly secure our border. In fact, in DC, nothing is even proposed to truly secure our border.

I know it ended yesterday but if nobody congratulated you personally on this win against the amnesty bill, I wanted to do it. We shut down the capitol hill switchboard . . . first time that’s ever been done.

I know a lot of people have cut into work, family and personal time to fight against it. It just wouldn’t die.

But in the end, it did die, and not of natural causes. We killed it. Thank you for what you did.

The senators that thought this thing up(Kennedy, et al)thought they could sneak it passed the voters in the dead of the night. No debate, no disclosing what was in the bill, just ram it through. That is how they thought they could get away with it. They knew the people, and most senators, wouldn't go for this bill if they really knew what was in it so they tried to illegally sneak it through and that is the answer to your questions.

I shudder to think about what might have happened had it NOT been for talk radio, and to a lesser extent, the Internet.

Imagine if the “fairness doctrine” had never been scrapped... There would have been no nation-wide talk radio call-in shows that could have motivated people the way they did.

It seems that the media, who was pretty much in the bag FOR the passage of the so called “CIR” bill, talks about how this was a great loss for Bush... Not too much mention regarding Reid, who did everything he could to be sure it passed... But nobody much is talking (again, in the MSM) about how the people rose up and let their representatives know what they thought... Sure occassionally you hear about how talk radio whipped up this furor, but not much else...

I wonder just why it is that nobody in Washington is talking about the grass-roots efforts against this bill... And the fact that talk radio was the only way people were able to learn about how awful this bill was: We certainly never got it from the media.

I call that defeat, not victory.

It will be, if we are lulled back into our respective stupors.

But, if we get active and let the elected know we are no longer slumbering, we can push for victories.

One 'battle' does not win the war. But right now, we have the political capital. We can use it or squander it. The elected hope we do the latter and go back to sleep.

In fact, in DC, nothing is even proposed to truly secure our border.

Unfortunately, there was a law passed in 2006 that was supposed to start, by building a fence... Since then, I believe that less than 20 miles of that fence has been built.

Again, we've got laws on the books. Nothing needs to be proposed at this point, with the possible exception of enforcing the existing laws. Which, as you point out, seems to be something that nobody in this administration is willing to do.

Another thing to remember about the media in this latest battle was how they turned a blind eye to the procedural malfeasance of Harry Reid and his squelching of dissenting opinion tactics.

Apparently the media only cares when stuff like that happens if republicans are showing power (as if pubs would ever have gone to the level of Reid’s tyranny). But as long as democraps do it, it’s perfectly fine.

I’ll agree with others that it’s one battle in a war that will continue and we mustn’t think it’s over. BUT...yesterday gave a much needed boost to the American public between the senate backing down and the house voting to prevent the FCC from initiating the Un-Fairness Doctrine.

We need more days like yesterday, but we’ll appreciate it’s accomplishments.
Bump!

What's needed now is the same kind of sustained effort to tell them to finish the fence this year, double the size of the border patrol, increase the capacity of the INS to handle legal immigration, increase ICE, start fining employers.

It isn't won until we get all those things done. Stopping an amnesty is good but that's not winning really.

The Republican Party, contrary to popular myth, raises most of its funds from the grass roots in small contributions.

Those members on the wrong side of the immigration issue may not be able to raise enough early money to assure a primary victory.

You can be sure they and their staffs are well aware of this basic fact.

The collapse of the McCain campaign is another early warning sign for the "Amnesty Republicans".
