Hurtling into the darkness
The Australian | June 16, 2007 | Greg Sheridan

Posted on 06/16/2007 3:26:43 AM PDT by Dundee

THE Palestinian civil war, in which the Islamist outfit Hamas has now taken control from Fatah of all of the Gaza Strip, is first a tragedy for the Palestinian people throughout the occupied territories...

...Jamal Abu al-Jadian, a senior Fatah leader, dressed as a woman to escape his home. But when he went, wounded by gunfire nonetheless, to a nearby hospital, a group of Hamas gunmen discovered him and shot him through the head more than 40 times...

...Hamas victory in Gaza represents a new strategic reality in the Middle East...

...radical Islamist extremism eating radical secular extremism. Moderation and democracy have not been on the playing field for a long time.

No one should be in any doubt about what Hamas is or what it represents. It is a terrorist organisation backed by Iran and Syria, dedicated to the destruction of Israel and wider opposition to the West...

...Hamas victory follows a pattern we can see in many parts of the Middle East, and in some other parts of the Islamic world. Overtly, Islamist extremism is the only ideology left standing...

...Israel's neighbours have worked out that you cannot beat Israel with armies and air forces. No Arab power will oppose Israel militarily. That way lies defeat...

...enemies of the US have worked out the same truth. No nation, except Saddam Hussein's Iraq and the Taliban's Afghanistan, is suicidal enough to take on the Americans force on force.

Any army that marches against the US will be defeated in weeks, any air force in days, any navy in hours. But there are other ways to hurt the US, and to hurt it strategically.

China discovered this in years gone by and proliferated nuclear weapons technology to Pakistan to hurt India, and to the Middle East to hurt the US...

Shouting “Allahu akbar!” the whole time, no doubt.

“Allah” is a demon.

The “prophet” Mahomet was a brigand, a pirate, a murderer, a rapist, a polygamist, a pedophile.

The more ardent Mahomet’s disciples, the more savage their behavior.

Arab secular nationalism is now dying all over the Arab world and it is being replaced by millenarian Islamism.

Bears repeating again and again and again.

Before we start tear out our hair in protestations of grief, a very short search by Google would reveal that Jamal Abu al-Jadian was a local chief of al-Aqsa martyrs Brigades.

This guy had it coming as much as his executioners do.

Cannibals. Imagine what the culture could accomplish if it was in possession of all of Israel. Most Western Eropean governments, and the Left in this country are a bunch of willfully blind morons who are trussing themselves up to be eaten by these same cannibals.

“Imagine what the culture could accomplish if it was in possession of all of Israel.”

Or Iraq? Or Saudi Arabia?

That is what the Islamic Fascists want and see strategically.
And the people of the left only see a way to hurt the United States, where they hope to rise up a United Soviet States of America from the ashes.

Greg Sheridan is pretty good for a journalist. He’s well respected by John Howard.

ding ding ding. This "civil war" would be better described as a gang war. Basically the Sopranos, but with Phil in charge and Tony getting his head run over(or shot 40 times, take your pick).

As an aside, the US and Israel bear much of the blame for the current situation. By weakening and destroying the the Sunni secular forces(it *did* make some sense at the time, arab secular nationalism was soviet aligned) much worse threats have arisen in their place.

Think Saddam's weakened WMD stockpile was a problem? Look at what Iran has been able to accomplish during the interim while the US has been busy in Iraq. And that's just the most recent example.

US foreign policy is hamstrung by the fact that it only sees one or two moves ahead while the Islamists are thinking for the long haul. Unless the US allows more pragmatic strategists to dictate how the WOT is waged the US is going to *lose* the WOT.

I don't think this will be a popular opinion here on FR. But it needs saying.

What does it mean to “lose the WOT”?

Does it mean that we surrender to the Caliphate envisioned and being assembled by Al Queda?

Does it mean long lines of dhimmis in the beheading queue here in the States?

Does it mean American cities devastated by nuclear detonations?

Does it mean the institution of “Sharia Law” throughout the United States?

If so, then it’s LONG PAST time to blow Mecca and Medina OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH.

The mistake is in the first sentence. “ first a tragedy for the Palestinian people “ They are themselves the tragedy.
