President Bush has cast a huge, dark cloud over the Republican party. But in that cloud's very size there may be a silver lining for the GOP. Most of those Americans who don't think President Bush made a mistake by going to war in Iraq are appalled by how clumsily the war has been conducted.
The president's strong backing for the "comprehensive" immigration reform bill now before the Senate, compounded by his attack on the character and motives of those who oppose it have split the GOP. Thousands of Republicans have changed their voter registration to "independent." The proportion of voters who identify themselves as Republicans has fallen to 30.8 percent from 37.3 percent during the 2004 election campaign, according to a recent Rasmussen poll.

George W Bush will go down in history as the Jimmy Carter of the Republican Party. Which is sad. Truly and terribly sad.
If he’s THAT lucky.... there is still a LOT of time left on the clock....

“Gee the same people who spent all their time the last 5 years bitching and whining endlessly about everything GOP dont think THEY are partly to blame for this mess?”
That’s right - people who opposed all the things Bush did that got us into this mess, are not responsible for said mess.
You said it - but you don’t understand it.
“no vitriol here directed at Ronald Reagan”
We learned a lot from that “amnesty” and are not going to be fooled twice into thinking Congress has ANY intention of border enforcement. Number 2, I hope to think we on FR would not speak ill of the dead and those who are not able to defend themselves. Do you think we are DUmmies? :)
I’m just saying, if people are going to blame Bush (rightly) they have to also blame Reagan. There is a lot of selective blame here directed at Bush.
The war is going fine.
The immigration bill was stupid.
Attacking the people who want a wall built between USA/Mexico FIRST, was incredibly stupid.
The Pubbies are screwed in '08!
Time to try an Independant candidate.
Who cares? As long as taxes are raised to pay my Social Security, I'm a happy guy ......................... FRegards
Why is it you and your buddies find it necessary to trash Reagan? If you think that will improve Bush’s image or that of your favorite leftie candidate, you are sadly mistaken.
Very simply put. Thanks for those simple examples. In the end for me its about the rule of law. When you have to fear for your safety and constantly read about police and courts with their hands tied,

you know that this is where the line needs to be drawn.
Because they hate America.
You just can’t stand the fact that with the amnesty (twice), Miers, and the port deal we keep thwarting Jorge’s globalist liberal agenda.
I am already happily receiving Social Security, although I could have invested that money myself and obtained a better return. But, what the heck, I’ll take it anyway. If not the denizens in DC will only spend it on less deserving folks, aka illegal aliens.
I actually supported Reagan on that. We needed to do something(sound familiar?) and I figured it was worth a shot despite the naysayers who said it would only lead to more amnesty seekers. I’m just saying, once was enoough and we should have learned a valuable lesson. If one doesn’t want racoons, one shouldn’t leave the lids off their trash cans.
My President is not above my party. I hope the Republican party as a conservative party is around for a long time, long after Bush is remembered for any good or evil. My party is not above my country. Someday the Republicans may not be around, I hope my country still is. MNJohnie, you are throwing a tantrum and it is not pretty. You sound like the President in attacking people like me who want what I think is best for the country. You can disagree with me on what is best or how to achieve it, but your tactics of insult and browbeating are not achieving what you want, you are loosing credibility with quite a few people with each new post.
Rassmussen:
During the full month of May, just 16% Strongly Approved of the way the President has performed his role and 45% Strongly Disapproved. Both those figures are also the worst ever recorded for the President who lost ground across all partisan and demographic groups. (see comments on comparing data from different firms).
Additionally, during the month of May, the number of people identifying themselves as Republicans fell once again to a new low30.8%. However, the number of Democrats also fell again and now rests at the lowest level in seventeen months.

“Bush is getting his revenge with the immigration bill”
I think you are right. He knew what would happen, and let it unfold to reveal them. With his high unpopularity, leaving office he didn’t have much to lose.
Also agree that this sets up Rep candidates to take him while looking at the bigger picture - 08
In many ways those people are like the liberals who, with regard to the handling of terrorists, insist the US play with Marquise of Queensbury rules (i.e. no photos of prisoners in embarrassing poses ala Abu Ghraib), but say it is OK for terrorists to commit real torture on prisoners, murder them, and commit horrendous suicide bombings on innocent civilians because “that is what terrorists do, but we must be nice”.
So you are claiming that Bush trashed himself on purpose to allow those that came after to draw a distinction between themselves and his administration?
Funny thing about sacrifices...when you are trying to hit a home run and come up short, it may look like a sacrifice fly...
It all depends on what was in his heart, and his heart has been clear on this for a long time...he was trying to hit a home run.
The struggle over the Immigration Bill has demonstrated again that the labels: “Republican”, and “Democrat”, are only for the benefit of the amateur voter.
Politics is far too complex to allow such simple classification.
So True. :^|
Why is it you and your buddies realize your bile and vitriol far exceed bush bashing, that it's tearing the GOP apart?
Early in 2009 you're gonna get a pretty big shock when you wake up and smell the diaper pail. The next Democrat president will be far more liberal that poll driven, triangulating Bubba.
You're gonna get tax hikes on everything.
You're gonna get socialized medicine.
You're gonna get firearms laws far worse than the assault weapons ban.
You're gonna a couple of more Ruth Ginsburgs who will make decisions about God, guns, gays and every liberal issue that will haunt you for the rest of your life.
You're gonna get environmentalists determining our energy policy.
You're gonna get a gutted military.
You're gonna get a retreat in the war on terror.
And you're gonna deserve every bit of it
And your point is........?
