President Bush has cast a huge, dark cloud over the Republican party. But in that cloud's very size there may be a silver lining for the GOP. Most of those Americans who don't think President Bush made a mistake by going to war in Iraq are appalled by how clumsily the war has been conducted.
The president's strong backing for the "comprehensive" immigration reform bill now before the Senate, compounded by his attack on the character and motives of those who oppose it have split the GOP. Thousands of Republicans have changed their voter registration to "independent." The proportion of voters who identify themselves as Republicans has fallen to 30.8 percent from 37.3 percent during the 2004 election campaign, according to a recent Rasmussen poll.

GITP - Some slow Saturday night, I’m going to invite my old college buddies over. In a takeoff of the old “Hi Bob” game from college days (via the Bob Newhart show), we’re going to play the MNJohnnie drinking game on Free Republic!
How does it work? Everytime MNJohnnie uses one of the following words or phrases in a post, whoever is on the button drinks the appropriate amount. The chart follows:
“Stupid” - 1 drink
“Moron” and/or “Moronic” - 2 drinks
“Ignorant” - 3 drinks
“Pathetic” - 4 drinks
“Bush hater” - Chug the rest of your drink
I figure if we start at 9 p.m., by midnight we will all be passed out face down on the floor. :-)
If MNJohnnie has a rational, coherent conversation with another FReeper that does not include name-calling and/or anger, the game is automatically over and everyone goes home.
I’m not worried, however. To my knowledge, the last option has never taken place. :-)
___________
MNJohnnie - Lighten up, Francis.
I suggest a few more words:
Mindless
Ilk
Idiot
Bitch
Rabid
Knee-Jerk
Posting the link to the Wikipedia Know-Nothing page - drink the rest of the bottle.
Impossible. He berated his conservative base (you and me) for not supporting this. He brokered this bill and tried to get it passed. Last straw, meet the pile...
None of us do it to "trash Reagan."
That's a stupid meme thought up by people who are afraid to face up to the truth:
Reagan did grant amnesty to millions of illegal.
Reagan did run up the deficit.
Reagan did respond badly to islamic terrorism.
Reagan did appoint Sandra Day O'conner and Anthony Kennedy to the Supreme Court.
It's the truth. It's history. You and your buddies who are spewing the most hateful garbage about Bush refuse to pull your heads out of your buts and face the fact that you're going way overboard.
I'm sick and tired of a bunch of knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, protectionist, isolationist, flat-earther, Buchananite paleocon luddite Philistines poisoning the GOP with their treasonous bile.
That's not what I said. I said that if the R's try to stick with the current RNC game plan, they are going to continue to lose ground to the D's. Of course the D's would be worse. I'm terrified of D control of the presidency and the congress. But not so terrified that I can't see the log in my own party's eye. And it's a big, honkin' log.
The Bush administration is now over. The Republican party has to figure out a way to survive its demise. More of the same will not work.
I think someone he trusts is deliberately leading him astray.
You've certainly ID'd yourself for exactly what you are: a one-world globalist America-HATER.
Exactly!
To surrender to the RATS in this country is as unthinkable as surrendering to radical Islam.
With all due respect, we (the conservatives) have not had much of a say in running the party since 2000. I can tell you that as a (until recently) minor level party official. Since 2000, the national and state parties have been firmly in the hands of the Bush team. When they say jump, the state parties have been saying "how high." The reason, the Bush team controls the money spigot in the party. I have seen more than one instance of that up close here at home.
The only time conservatives get more than lip service from the party is when we yell (Harriet Miers, Dubai, and recently, Amnesty). Perhaps if the party would pay more attention to the people who put them in office, we wouldn't have to yell so often or so loudly.
So who is to blame for where we are? The folks running the show and making the decisions? Or everyone else?
And you’re gonna get real open borders.
Me, too. I will not sit home or throw a tantrem and vote 3rd party or write in just to make a point.
Oooh! I love it when somebody wraps themself in a flag so they can insult others!
I don't like the amnesty bill or support it one bit. But I refuse to let it drive me so insane I start saying crap as stupid as "Bush is worse than Carter".
In case you haven't noticed, politics is a very emotional business. No matter how bad things get it does no good to eat your young.
Come 2009 (with a Democrat president), it's gonna be fun to remind the Bush haters about how refreshed, re-energized, optimistic and primed for victory the GOP was after the immigration debate of 2007.
If you think it was a mistake, what was the alternative?
No harm intended;) I just needed to get that off my chest!
Your counter arguements sound just like liberals when I point out that democrats are for abortions. They say well the Republicans aren’t any better. So what you are saying is that you would rather have democrats who are going to give you none of what you want instead of Republicans who will deliver at least 50%.
I think all of us here on FR have the same goals in mind but we differ on strategy as to how to get there. I see no way to advance our agenda by surrendering. I’ll be willing to settle for a baby step forward, if need be rather than a giant step backward.
Common sense is so refreshing these days.
Good question. I remember how the grass roots got sooooooo close to replacing Arlen Specter with Pat Toomey (I'll always be p.o.'d at Bush for that one) in a blue state. Maybe if some of the pent up anger here was spent on, let's say, supporting Hagel's opponent in the primary rather than bashing Bush, we'd actually get something accomplished.
