SEKULOW ADDRESSES FALSE BOY SCOUT ALLEGATION

Monday, December 11, 2006

I’m sure by now you’ve heard rumors Gov. Romney is not as conservative as he claims. One allegation bothersome to me was the idea that Gov. Romney somehow prevented the Boy Scouts from participating in the Olympics in Salt Lake to make a political statement. Constitutional lawyer Jay Sekulow sent me an e-mail which addresses this issue—which is just one of the many misrepresentations a group called MassResistance is circulating amongst conservatives:

Short Summary - Brian Camenker’s claim in “The Mitt Romney Deception” that “Romney Barred Boy Scouts from public participation in the 2002 Olympics” is entirely false. There are several articles that directly contradict Camenker’s conclusion. NewsMax.com, Camenker’s source, did not even claim that Romney made the decision to bar the Scouts. In fact, Romney, at least at that time, sat on the Boy Scout’s executive board. The Boy Scouts said that the NewsMax article was false. Even NewsMax admitted that the Olympic Committee said that there was an age restriction of 18 years old and up to be a volunteer. There are also inconsistencies in the two NewsMax articles, only one of which is cited by Camenker. There is also some negative treatment of the accuracy of NewsMax.com, but mostly by liberal critics. Since no major media source ran anything about this story, and the local media directly contradicted it, it appears that Camenker’s claim is false.

I. Camenker’s claim that “Romney Barred Boy Scouts from public participation in the 2002 Olympics” and his source, NewsMax.com.

Camenker does not accurately describe his own source, NewsMax.com. The NewsMax article did claim that the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Committee refused to let the Boy Scouts participate as a group. However, the NewsMax article states that the spokesperson for the Olympic Committee stated in an interview that the Boy Scouts were not allowed to participate as a group because of an age limit.........SEKULOW ADDRESSES FALSE BOY SCOUT ALLEGATION

Massachusetts - Firearms Reform Bill Sent to the Governor`s Desk - Tuesday, June 29, 2004

Despite the efforts of some (including The Boston Globe) to spin this bill as an extension of or creation of a new "Assault Weapons" ban, the bill makes no net changes to the Commonwealth`s laws regarding those types of firearms. The three sections referencing them merely dealt with re-affirming the definitions of what an "Assault Weapon" could be.

Here are just some of the points that the media (including The Boston Globe) got wrong.

Myth: Some headlines claimed that the legislature voted to expand the ban on the sale of the same 19 guns that the federal government has banned.

Fact: The guns are already banned in Massachusetts . The legislature only voted to clarify the definition of so-called "assault weapons," but made no changes to the number of guns included.

Myth: The gun ban was extended.

Fact: Our state`s gun ban was not due to disappear, nor will it become invalid if the federal ban sunsets in September.

Myth: The legislature somehow "won over" gun-rights supporters by including reforms.

Fact: NRA and Gun owners` Action League (GOAL) had made it very clear to the legislature that we would not give up any ground. NRA and GOAL supported this bill because it did not ban any guns, and because it made much-needed reforms.

Myth: Those legislators that wanted to expand the semi-auto gun ban claimed that they "spearheaded" S.2367.

Fact: Credit should be given to Senator Stephen Brewer (D- Barre) and Senator Richard T. Moore (D - Uxbridge) for the reform language.

Myth: The Massachusetts House approved a new version of the ban that would decouple the state definitions from the federal ones.

Fact: The bill merely takes the existing state references to federal law, and fixes the language to a point in time in 1994. Because that is the federal language is currently in effect, the net effect on Massachusetts gun owners is zero. No new gun bans are banned. Keep in mind that the state language in effect before this bill was NEVER set to expire.

With that in mind, NRA members should be very pleased in knowing that their efforts to educate and work with their local representatives and senators resulted in a successful reform action.

Thanks to you and the Gun Owners` Action League, lawful gun owners can now take advantage of this first set of real reforms in over five years.

The Boston Globe's Mitt Romney / Mormon Church conspiracy theory: Journalism or politics?

Bruce Wilson

Deseret News Oct 2006

I live in Utah and write political commentary. I'm also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints — commonly known as the Mormon Church. So it shouldn't be surprising that recent reports in The Boston Globe caught my attention. Allegations of Mitt Romney's political action committee and Mormon Church leaders collaborating in a sinister plot to drum-up support for Romney's unannounced presidential campaign sounded interesting.

But my interest soon shifted from alleged campaign infractions to obvious journalistic infractions. Theoretically, news is published only if it's factual, balanced and fair. I guess in this case The Globe thought one out of three was close enough.......DeseretNews.com

DNC on Romney

The Mitt Romney Deception (by Brian Camenker, MassResistance) linked by DNC

Despite recent statements across the country by Governor Mitt Romney claiming he's pro-life, pro-family and a committed conservative, a broad investigation of his actual statements, actions, and public positions over the years indicates that he has spent his entire career speaking and governing as a liberal - and that his new found conversion to conservatism very likely coincides with his candidacy for the presidency.

Unmarked Package's Homeage also deals with lineral media lies about Romney

Governor Mitt Romney

Examine the record of Mitt Romney while Governor of Massachusetts and you will find that he applied and practiced core conservative principles of fiscal and social conservatism in one of the most liberal states of the U.S. It required courage to take the conservative positions and actions he did in the face of a hostile political environment.

I believe we should care about Mitt Romney's actions while in a position of authority, since taking office in 2003, much more than we care about words he spoke in campaigns years ago. Mitt Romney's record as Governor, when his actions had real consequences, tells the real story about how he would govern as President.

The following information is my latest collection gathered from personal research all around the web. I hope FReepers will give it an honest look.

Romney using the "F" word

I have it on good authority that this is true. I really hope so. Wouldn't want a leader that doesn't know how to use powerful language when required. BTW, that road leading to Snow Basin was supposed to be open when this incident occurred. My close relative was there.

Brian Camenker is like a cross between Fred Phelps and Markos of Daily Kos.

He is a hate monger and should not be taken seriously.

If you have to lie to make your point maybe your point is not true.

>>My close relative was there.

Third-cousin, twice removed, of your sister in law's, mother's, uncle by second marraige third generation on your father's maternal line?

According to one 18 year old eye-witness source Romney swore. According to multiple other eye-witnesses who were there he did not. The SLT went with the one source.

I saw an article pointing out the Trib lied about it. Interestingly, whether he said it or not I don't consider the incident worthy of "news" or relevant to his Presidency. Maybe a gossip column or E-news entertainment on TV but not a supposedly reputable "newspaper".

Great piece for those willing to read real arguments — ie. 1% of people.

You need to put this out with summary points. Include references, naturally, but make the whole thing clear and convincing in under 30 seconds.

Please....Let’s get real. No need to be a smart a**. This is not an issue to get all worked up over. You should be proud that he’s a normal person. That was my take. Defend him for his politics, not his use of language. If he claims he does not use strong language, then my tag line applies.

Good job in addressing those deceptions, Rameumptom. I am also tired of hearing people spew lies about Romney’s supposed appointment of “gay activist judges.” Here is a very good summary and rebuttal to those claims:

http://blog.electromneyin2008.com/?p=1708

As it turns out, according to a 2005 Boston Globe article, the one judge (NOT judges as has been falsely stated here on FR) was a lower court district judge who was deemed “well-qualified” by a centralized Judicial Nominating Commission—meaning that he was recognized as following the law in criminal matters. He was hardly a threat to the gay marriage issue since that would likely be dealt with at a much higher judicial system level.

Also, it seems that Romney does, in fact, have a history of booting out gay activist judges:

http://www.innewsweekly.com/innews/?class_code=Br&article_code=2486&PHPSESSID=9f36894422768feb9d0

I would also like to point out a couple of little know Romney quotes on the matter of activist judges:

Romney: ”Beware of activist judges. The Legislature is our lawmaking body, and it is the Legislature’s job to pass laws. . . . While the law protects states from being forced to recognize gay marriage, activist state courts could reach a different conclusion, just as ours did. It would be disruptive and confusing to have a patchwork of inconsistent marriage laws between states. Amending the Constitution may be the best and most reliable way to prevent such confusion and preserve the institution of marriage.” (Wall Street Journal op-ed, Feb. 5, 2004)

Romney: ”The real threat to the states is not the constitutional amendment process, in which the states participate, but activist judges who disregard the law and redefine marriage in order to impose their will on the states, and on the whole nation. At this point, the only way to reestablish the status quo ante is to preserve the definition of marriage in the federal Constitution before courts redefine it out of existence.” (Testimony to Senate Judiciary Committee, June 22, 2004)

I have heard a story that he has had others swear for him. I am guessing he has sworn before. I just don’t consider it newsworthy.

Sort of like “This just in - Romney ate wheaties instead of Cheerios this morning.”

President Bush never signed any gun control bills.

It is true that when he was running in 2000 he said he would sign to renew the ASB, he made it clear he would veto it if anything was added to it.

When it came time to be renewed he met with Bill Frist and had Frist make sure the RATS were allowed to add so many things that nobody would dare vote for it.

It died.

Bush played the RATS like a banjo on that issue.

Mitt is a RINO. The AWB reference supports his lack of leadership by not vetoing it on principle alone. He signed it, based reports from you pro RINO folks because he knew it would have been overridden. You Mitt supporters claim Mitt had to work with the Liberal controlled houses of government, therefore his programs were impeded. This shows his lack of leadership, POTUS Reagan had the same obstacles and lead this nation in spite of them.

Then Mitt passed Romney Care where the public is forced to by medical insurance. A real conservative program, NOT.

He will cave to the Liberals just like he did in Mass.

"In the last debate Romney said he supported the 2nd amendment AND an assault weapons ban." - That is an oxymoron!

Why? The 2nd amendment gives us the right to keep and bear arms, but most of us realise that the right is not unlimited, for example most people don't fight the ban on fully automatic weapons (machine guns), and there isn't a lot of people calling for the right to own grenade launchers or RPGs, even though they are "arms" as well.

So really, a vast majority is in AGREEMENT that there is a line between "acceptable" arms and "unacceptable" arms.

The only question is where you draw that line. We can argue over that line, we can say people are stupid for where they draw a that line, but it's hardly an oxymoron to suggest that the line exists. We all know it does.

I heard a story that a reporter asked Romney if it was true that he was so clean-cut he had to get his staff to swear for him. Romney then turned to his aide and said “could you answer that for me”.

I like a guy with a sense of humor. And it is possible you might not ever swear, there are words I never use because they are not in my vocabulary. Why couldn’t swear words be out of a vocabulary.

Although I certainly wouldn’t be bothered if he used an occasional inappropriate epithet.

AWB banned guns based on nothing more than appearance.

To attempt to relate the AWB to machine guns and grenades is liberal spin that would make Schumer proud.
