The Alabama Legislature passed a new resolution Friday apologizing for the state's role in slavery. The new resolution stitches together a House-passed resolution by state Representative Mary Moore with one prepared by state Senator Hank Sanders.
The new resolution traces the history of slavery and segregation and then offers an apology from the Legislature. The Senate approved the new resolution 20-to-8 and the House concurred on an unrecorded voice vote.
The resolution now goes to Governor Riley. The governor's spokesman says he will sign the resolution as soon as it reaches his desk.
Legislatures in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina approved slavery apologies earlier this year.

OK, so people who didn’t do anything wrong apologized to people who didn’t have anything wrong done to them. I get it....I think.....I’m sure somewhere there is a reason for this....

The Alabama Republicans should have derailed this by demanding that the Alabama Democratic Party apologize for its frontline role in perpetuating and institutionalizing slavery.

You’d think there wasn’t ever any slavery or segregation up North.

I detest historical revisionism and the revisionists who practice it. History consists of lessons to be learned . . . . . NOT situations to be rectified 150+ years later!!!
When politicians (who are paid from tax revenues) have this little to occupy their time, adjourn the legislature, send them home and make them get REAL jobs!!!

All this does is open to door to people having nothing to do with slavery paying those who were never enslaved.

My Apology for slavery: We’re sorry that members of your own race captured your ancestors and then sold them as slaves to other people who in turn sold them as slaves to people who eventually brought them here where they were freed and given the opportunity and freedom to make a home in this country
To: VRWCmember
Alabama was once a wild territory where settlers often died of diseases, Indian attacks (Fort Mims was one of the largest massacres in US history), poor nutrition, and the dangers inherent in frontier life. Blacks too faced these dangers, cleared land, worked the soil, built bridges, and carved a state out of the wilderness. That is history. Over 98 percent of Blacks in Alabama were slaves, a few were “free men of color” and a few of those owned slaves. Times were tough and different then.
This corrupt and under-worked legislature just voted themselves a 62 percent pay raise. They have some more immediate things they need to apologize for.

What about the northern states? Any of them ready to apologize? What about Massachusetts who had the slave trading boats? Looks like Dixie is doing her duty to apologize anyway. Be patient...reparations are on the way.

The problem with that approach is the dems can rightly claim that many of the old Dixiecrats jumped to the Republicans, which they did.
I'd like to see an apology from the dems for destroying the black family. That is the real problem we face today. Most rural blacks in the South are pretty conservative on average, but vote dem because of dependence on government programs. They vote for their self interest.
