Live Thread: Senate Immigration/Amnesty Debate, 5/23/05 (Grassley Amendment, Etc.)
The United States Senate (via C-Span 2) and my own peabrain | 5/23/07 | truthkeeper

Posted on 05/23/2007 8:21:52 AM PDT by truthkeeper

Hi Folks.

In an effort to douse disinfectant on this debate, I'll try to post a daily thread. The details of this garbage legislation, once uncovered, are mind-boggling. I'm sure the elites would much prefer we not know or discuss them.

So far the Grassley Amendment is being discussed. This amendment would dump the judicial review/appeal process of a revoked visa (in the current and new law) and make the process similar to that of a denied visa. Inotherwords, GO HOME.

Grassley pointed out that under this legislation, even terrorists can appeal a revoked visa. His argument thus far is being countered by Kennedy and Menendez, D of New Jersey. He's currently droning on and on right now...nation of immigrants...family values don't end at the Rio Grande...jobs Americans won't do...

Get the picture?

As a small encouragement...

Last night I went to the last Bible study of the season....it was actually a dinner-get to gether with my Bible study group...

..I was prepared to give info and opinions on this...(in a reasoned tone--I tend to get emotional about this)...

..but was beat to the punch by another member who was totally caught up on details and passion!

He did an excellent job ....I piped in...

..and everyone who spoke voiced a like minded understanding of this piece of excrement.

I was delighted all these folks were tuned in and informed!!!!!!!!

I must be in the right group :)

Ours bumped CSPAN-2 up to the digital channels, so they could put a 2nd channel of “MASM”, which is just giving money to that evil owner of the Baltimore Orioles, whose name I won’t put here because I’m sure he’s got people watching the internet to sue anybody who says anything bad about him.

Wait, my phone is ringing....

OK, I just wanted to say that Peter Angelos is a great man, a fine patriotic american, a credit to humanity, and I’m happy to pay 2 bucks a month to watch repeats of his orioles playing baseball in 1970.

(is that ok, sir, can I hang up now?)

Kennedy and Specter are speaking right now, trying to determine the amount of temporary workers they'll agree to. Kennedy cites some government report that says we will have 1 million new jobs a year that will need to be filled by "migrants." Proposes, "in the future," that we create a goverment panel with "workers" on it to determine what the correct number should be. Yeah...that's the ticket.

Have we really sunk this far? For shame, U.S. senate.

Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them.

STOP AMNESTY NOW!! WE CAN DO IT!!

The best way to stop Shamnesty

Grassley's amendment due for a vote at 2PM...

BUT ...Bingaman, Democrat, opposes it & has suggested a change...(also at 2)

I have to run out for a few minutes....(during the vote!)

And yes, truthie, we have sunk that low.

Several times, and in multiple manners. Just checking! Outrage not communicated to our Senators is not worth much!

Voting on the Bingaman Amendment to reduce the number from 400,000 to 200,000.

It is smoke and mirrors.

They are spending time on reducing the number of immigrations who would have skills, yet they give a pass to those supposedly coming in to pick lettuce.

Although the number for legal, skilled immigrations may be too high and should come under scrutiny, the problem most people have with this overall immigration bill is that it allows too many unskilled to magically gain legalized status.

Most skilled immigrants who come in are self-supporting. A very high number of unskilled illegals immigrants who come in have to rely on taxpayer subsidies for them and their families.

Either these Congresscritters are deaf, blind and stupid, or they think the American public is.

Really? I heard him reading something that sounded like that on the Senate floor this morning. Maybe he amended it for this legislation...dunno.

The whole thing is nothing more than a massive bait-and-switch. I suspect at least 75% of Americans just want the damn wall built, an enforcement of all existing laws, no more anchor babies, and cessation of perqs or bennies to illegals who already slipped through.

I know I'm in that group.

P.S. I was out when Grassley was voted on. What happened with that one, do you know?

Graham has offered an amendment on mandatory minimum prison terms. Kennedy is hassling him on it, saying the language (re: sentencing guidelines) in this new legislation is stricter. However, it sounds like he's saying prison terms are discretionary by the judge.

And he says it will cost too much and be too bloated. Hilarious.

On the Graham amendment, yes it increases prison sentence for felon aliens. Of course just keeping them out in the first place would solve that wouldn’t it? But we don’t see Graham doing that! His amendment is for his friends in the private prison system.

Senator Lindsey O. Graham (R-SC)
Political Action Committee Contributions: 2005-2006 Campaign Cycle

CORRECTIONS CORPORATION OF AMERICA INC POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE $2614

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/bio/fec/?id=531&cycle=2005-2006

Some background on private prisons, aliens and buying politicians.

Private prisons are BIG business and they contribute BIG $ to candidates. The president has benefited from it along with many politicians. When you look at them they are the same politicos who push ‘immigration reform’. Illegal aliens are good business for the private prison industry.

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/bio/fec/?commid=C00366468&page=campaigns&order=TOTAL&cycle=2003-2004

And then you have Philip Perry, who recently resigned as head council for Homeland Security under a cloud of suspicion, a lobbyist for Lockheed Martin and Corrections Corp, a private prison system.

Who is Phil Perry?

[snip]

CCA, the nation’s largest private prison company, has credited the Bush administration’s expansion of federal police for creating new business for the firm.

Three times, the Corrections Corporation of America Political Action Committee made $15,000 donations to the National Republican Senatorial Committee. A number of $5,000 donations went to the Bush-Cheney campaign, the New Republican Majority Fund, and other GOP money groups.

Of the $149,500 doled out by the company’s PAC in the 2004 election cycle, 96 percent went to Republicans around the country.

The $5,000 spent on Democrats went to Tennessee politicians- Reps. Jim Cooper, Lincoln Davis, John Tanner and Harold Ford Jr., according to data from the Federal Election Commission.

Money was also doled out to candidates from states where CCA has deals to run prisons, such as Colorado, Georgia and Florida.

Dick Williams, state chairman for Common Cause of Tennessee, a Nashville-based government watchdog group, said it’s obvious that CCA is trying to buy influence.

CCA wins when politicians from the local to federal level decide to send prisoners to its private jails, he said.

Graham wants Mandatory Prison terms, and Kennedy is saying that it ties the hands of Judges and we don't have room or the money to support this rule of law.

Not that any of it really matters, since they won't enforce the law anyway.

It's a joke.

Im so sick to death of the b.s.....OBL ‘speak’ for the past two days...if the FAR right is angry and the FAR left are angry about this bill...we must have it just about right!! aghhhh!

these people will say ANYTHING to justify what they’re doing.

Who wants to take ‘bets’ on the time and date when they pull out the big time sympathy card by sending ICE to go grab Elvira and her kid, just like Elian Gonzales?
