Poland and Czech Republic to take unified stance on anti-missile shield

Warsaw, Poland May 22, 2007

Polish President Lech Kaczynski met with Czech President Vaclav Klaus on Monday to present a united front in negotiations on the U.S. missile defense shield which is to be placed on Polish and Czech territories.

Kaczynski declared that Poland's negotiating position would be consulted with the Czechs and added that "in this affair, Poland shares full solidarity with the Czech Republic."

Kaczynski added, "we do not want any special benefits, we want a world which will be safer."

The U.S. wants to place 10 anti-ballistic missile interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic to protect against attacks from "rogue" states like Iran.

Russia has vehemently protested the plan saying it would alter the balance of power in Europe and threathen stability.

The U.S. and Poland have been quick to downplay those fears, repeatedly calling the system, "defensive." Lech Kaczynski said, "it is a defensive system, I emphasise, purely defensive, which is not directed against anyone."

The missile system is opposed by the majority of the populace in both the Czech Republic and Poland. It appears that the countries' leaders are more interested in consulting the matter with U.S. President Bush in June than they are in holding national referendums to consult the matter with their citizens.

Russia has a pathological dislike of the idea of anybody putting any restrictions on the aggressive capabilities of rogue states.

“The missile system is opposed by the majority of the populace in both the Czech Republic and Poland. “

I’d like to see that poll and how they conducted it.
