Bush 'told British troops will leave Iraq'
The Australian ^ | May 20, 2007

US President George W. Bush has been told to prepare for British U-turn on Iraq once Gordon Brown becomes prime minister, The Sunday Telegraph newspaper said. Mr Bush has been briefed by White House officials to expect an announcement on British troop withdrawals during Brown's first 100 days in office, the weekly said.

The president was advised on how to handle the aftermath of a British pullout and the end of steadfast support from London, said the broadsheet, citing senior officials.

Outgoing Prime Minister Tony Blair is due to step down on June 27 after a decade in power, with finance minister Brown set to take over.

Under Mr Blair, Britain has been the United States' staunchest ally in the war in Iraq and its key partner in the decision to invade the country in March 2003.

Senior officials in the US National Security Council, the Pentagon and the State Department have expressed their fears about Brown, The Sunday Telegraph said.

"There is a sense of foreboding,'' an unnamed senior official was quoted as saying.

"We don't know if he will be there when we need him. We expect a gesture that will greatly weaken the United States government's position.''

And Mark Kirk, a congressman in Bush's Republican party who discussed Iraq policy at the White House last week, said: "The American view is that's he's a much weaker political leader than Blair. "There's the fear in Washington that he won't be as strong an ally.''

Mr Blair was in Washington this week for his last talks with Mr Bush, before jetting to Iraq for talks with political leaders in Baghdad and a visit to British troops in the main southern city of Basra.

"I have no doubt at all that Britain will remain steadfast in its support for Iraq,''

(with apologies to Roger Miller)

England swings like a minaret do,
Bombs bursting underground two by two,
Women in burqas, Mullahs call the tune,
Looks like it’s gonna be LONDON-istan soon!

On one hand the article quotes the cause for concern as "an unnamed senior [White House] official."

On the other hand, the article goes on to note in closing that "A source close to Mr Brown said: "These fears are unfounded. Gordon is a committed Atlanticist who wants to strengthen and deepen our ties with America around our shared values, and who wants to persuade the rest of Europe to work in closer co-operation with America."

This looks another case of the MSM trying to forward their liberal agenda by inventing a situation. Therefore, I predict it will be the lead story throughout the media for at least the next week or so.

The U.S. is right behind England for the troop pull-out. Look for it to begin for the U.S. around the 2008 elections. And look for a lot of Republicans jumping on that bandwagon, too...

Brown is a one eyed Scot ( lost his eye in a sporting accident.)who "ammalgamated" the Scottish Regiments out of existence, ending 400 years of fighting tradition which was the jewel of the Britiah Armed Forces.

His doing that caused the win of the Scottish National Party in recent Scotland elections, over Labor. He is a raving Socialist Moonbat. A friend of John Kerry's, whose tenure will be short as PM. He will be buried in the next election in Britain.

Your assessment of Brown is spot on.

however I hope your prophetic vision is as sure ..”tenure will be short as PM. He will be buried in the next election in Britain.”

I look forward to casting my vote against him for some more worthy conservative cause.

Spare me, because of Blair and his limp wristed insistance on wasting time talking to the French at the UN we invaded Iraq far too late, giving them time to plan their resistance to the occupation.

Then they sat outside Basra, waiting for Americans to win the war for them.

We would do better without them.

And if Jorge had cojones that weren't misplaced selling out national sovereignty with amnesty for half of Latin America, he'd announce a simultaneous withdrawal of the U.S. from NATO. Let Europe fend for itself...maybe actually pay for a real military or two instead of having U.S. taxpayers subsidize the existence of lilliputian nations who resent us for it.

I guess if Harry can’t fight, none of them can. I’ve said it before, but David Cameron can’t come soon enough.

Under Cameron Britain will only offer soundbite support and will not be a steadfast ally. A British conservative FRer told me on another thread the other day they want something more like the 1980s US-West German relations rather than the traditional “special relationship” under Blair (presumably this means a Helmut Kohl rather than another Margaret Thatcher).
