A military plane may have crashed Tuesday afternoon in southeast Kentucky, though there are conflicting reports about where or if the plane went down.
Initial reports said that a C-130 Hercules had crashed in Knox County near Granny Rose Hollow at Highway 459 near the Whitley County line. Several reports were called in to police just after 4 p.m. that a large plane had been flying low in the area trailing smoke, clipped some trees, then went down.
One eyewitness told LEX 18 that he saw a large, green military plane with four engines flying low, and that it seemed to be struggling to regain altitude. He also said there were puffs of smoke coming out of at least one of the engines.
Later. a report said that the plane was a Kentucky National Guard plane, by KNG officials say all of their planes and crews have been accounted for.
The C-130 Hercules is a very large plane that carries troops, vehicles and armaments into battle; drops paratroopers and supplies from the sky; serves as airborne and ground refuelers; provides emergency evacuation and humanitarian relief; and conducts airborne early warning and maritime surveillance.
There are generally 4-6 crew members when the plane is in operation, with at least two pilots, one flight engineer and one loadmaster.
The plane has a capacity of 92 passengers or 64 airborne troops.
LEX 18 has crews in the area and will have the latest as details become available.
Update:
C130 Crashes In Kentucky
(May 15, 2007)According to broadcast reports, the US Air Force is confirming that a C-130 transport plane has crashed while en route to a military base in Kentucky.
The Air National Guard plane crashed late Tuesday afternoon near Woodbine, Ky.
Law enforcement officers, firefighters and other emergency crews were searching for the downed plane early Tuesday evening.
There was no immediate word on casualties or on how many people were aboard the plane.
I am hoping they are wrong. I remember a few times we would fly a low level trining flight at 300 - 500 feet, people would call in a plane crash. I hope this is one of those times.
Has = Does
I haven’t heard a thing. I’m watching FNC.

Ping the Bluegrass?
Sure hope so...thanks for posting.
Damn!
That bird should be able to fly on only two engines IIRC.
Yes, it can. The bird that got me out of Iraq last year did so minus its number 3 engine.
The USAF report I saw said the aircraft went down. New reporting suggests it didn’t.

The defense department now tells ABC news there is no missing or crashed plane in Southern Kentucky.
ABC originally reported that the military had confirmed there was a missing plane in the Woodbine area of Knox County.
Witnesses told Action News 36 they saw a low-flying military cargo plane with smoke coming from and engine.
Another witness told us the plane had clipped some trees.
None of the witnesses say they saw or heard the plane crash.
The 1st Air Wing in Alabama, which tracks all air traffic in the U.S., says there are no missing aircraft.
They say a plane was conducting a training mission in that area earlier today, but that plane landed safely at Pope Airforce base in North Carolina.
It has only been 3 hours, government plane, classifications, ,,,,hard to tell yet.
That all depends on weight. Three engines should not be a problem unless more is wrong with the plane.
Good, maybe the pilot was able to pull it out and land it safely.
I was going to say the WVANG flies C-130s out of Martinsburg but the Air Wing in Alabama would know about them too.

I was a translator on the EC-130H out of DM. We flew high in the sky as that bucket of bolts could go. Had to make sure the Iraqi SAM radar sites could get a good lock on us.
Also rode on the C-130’s from Dharan to Riyadh when we went down there. Worst trip ever. Got a flat tire on the Dharan taxi way (in the summer time).
