Normally I respect the confidentiality of high profile clients, but given Doc's passing today, I wanted to share some personal interaction I had with him a few years back.

Doc regularly chartered aircraft from my company from 2001 to 2002. In fact, my first flight with him ended around 3AM on 9/11/01 when we came back from the Houston area. I remember thinking at the time that I wished we had spent the night, but Doc always wanted to be home no matter how late. In hindsight, I'm glad we came back as we would have been stuck otherwise.

Despite his controversial public perception, Dr. Falwell was a jovial, happy person - a grandfatherly figure. He loved to play harmless practical jokes on his family, friends and colleagues. While I was with him, he was the consummate gentleman and related well to people from all kinds of backgrounds.

My favorite experience with him was at Lake Louise, Alberta Canada in Nov 2001 (beautiful place by the way). He participated in a conference there and I managed to get some one-on-one time with him. He peppered me with questions about growing up, where did I go to school etc. Being a poly sci major, I couldn't resist asking him about his Moral Majority days and his history with Ronald Reagan. I got about 30 mins of personal recollection concerning Pres Reagan's personality, details of his work on the elections, conversations they had etc. It was political junkie heaven!!!

Just remembered another funny moment: we were enroute to Nashville for the National Religious Broadcasters Convention IIRC. A dense fog developed and we had to divert to a nearby municipal airport. It was a Sat morning so there wasn't much going on in this small town. One of the locals was kind enough to let us take his personal vehicle, an older pickup with a shell on the back. In the front was Doc and two of his aides; in the back, me and his younger son, Jonathan. We pulled up to the front of the Opryland Hotel, in all its glory, and out of this beat up truck came Doc and his entire "entourage". He joked a few seconds later: "if only the New York Times could see me now"

My prayers go out to his many friends and the family that supported him so much... GODSPEED DOC!!!

Godspeed, brother Falwell. Perhaps you didn’t always choose your words as carefully as you might have wished but you had a good heart.

President and Mrs. Bush Saddened by Death of Jerry Falwell

Laura and I are deeply saddened by the death of Jerry Falwell, a man who cherished faith, family, and freedom. As the founder of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, Jerry lived a life of faith and called upon men and women of all backgrounds to believe in God and serve their communities. One of his lasting contributions was the establishment of Liberty University, where he taught young people to remain true to their convictions and rely upon God's word throughout each stage of their lives.

Today, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Macel and the rest of the Falwell family.
