The Royal Navy has unveiled its largest and most powerful attack submarine, a month before the over-budget, overdue vessel is due be launched.

Military officials say HMS Astute will be able to circumnavigate the planet without surfacing, and its nuclear reactor is designed to last for the vessel's 25-year operational life, meaning it will never need to be refueled.

Reminds me of the old Soviet Union’s Typhoon class.

Whoa, now that’s more like it! I used to work at Moffett Field, where the country’s last wooden dirigible hanger held our stealth blimp. Well, at least that’s what they told me. It looked just exactly like it was empty...

reminds me of when (then) President Carter told the world about the new Stealth Fighter... a major blunder (one of many from Carter).

If it’s underwater, then you can’t see it.

Darn. With all those masts and whatnot, it looks like a jungle on top of the sail.

So if you do catch sight of it, have you made an Astute observation?

What a waste of money. The Brits will need men on the ground, not strategic defence. The Brits still do not understand that they are no longer a world power, and spend money on expensive, useless toys, while drumming down the Scottish regiments?

This is a faux pas worthy of a Labor Government, and redolent of somnolent Europork. If they built Aircraft carriers it would make more sense than this tub. They need rapid forward deployment of highly trained men on the ground.

This sub is as outdated as the great battleships of WWII , such as the USS Missouri.

No matter how stealthy it is, it could be destroyed by an air launched high tech. homing torpedo costing very little.

What a laugh.

I’m sorry, but I have to disagree with you, Britain is the only Military power left in Europe worth note. No other nation in Europe (at least western europe) has a standing army that could remotely defend the nation if they were attacked.

There are a number of nations which operate their own attack subs yet lack sophisticated ASW aircraft and related hardware, such as sonobouys. This boat is intended to kill enemy subs, a mission which may or may not take it within range of an enemy’s airpower assets. Outdated? No, not yet.

This is a luxury that Britain on balance needs to do without. She has cut her standing army and personnel for the benefit of high tech, high status weaponry, so as to keep pace with the USA and others.

If Britain must cut its Scottish regiments and "amalgamate" them , thus ending the very regimental factor and local recruiting which has guaranteed a strong British Army, these are desperate times indeed.

This fancy tub is pure dreaming. And it is hogwash. On balance it is an expenditure of disasterous proportons, especially when combined with that gunless, non ground support, flaming sky torch, strategic interceptor known as the boondoggle Eurofighter.

Both the tub and the fighter are outdated in modern warfare, and the Brits have their priorities all wrong. I see no guns on this tub either, just as on their Eurofighter, which must carry ballast to fly instead of guns it was designed to have.

Try to go to war without them.

If they plan on buying 4 or 5 of them, they will make a powerful addition to the sadly depleted fleet. Buying 1 is simply vanity.

‘I see no guns on this tub either, just as on their Eurofighter, which must carry ballast to fly instead of guns it was designed to have.’

If you’re going to blather on about other peoples weaponry, at least try to keep yourself up to date so as not to look like a blowhard.

I hope they have improved our detection since I retired (1990). I seem to remember that we had to turn on a noise augmenter in order for our sonobouys/aircraft to locate us.

The only thing that pissed me off was that we didn't carry any self defense weapons against aircraft. If we had that, you wouldn't want to be on an airplane trying to drop a torpedo on us. We'd be able to target you long before you had a clue about where we were.
