What has been done before?
You seem to be missing the obvious. The Supplemental passed by Congess contains $100 billion for the troops plus some pork. So the Dems can say that they are providing funding for the troops. It is the President who is stopping it.
The sticking point is the timing of when we leave. The Dems can claim that the majority of the public wants us out and they are "tired" of the war in Iraq, which they claim is a civil war. "Favorable conclusion" is a subjective judgment. I still believe the Dems hold the better cards in terms of PR. The President will have to compromise if he wants the funds.
Not according to the latest PEW poll. There will be no time table attached to any bill Bush signs. Any benchmarks associated with the funding will be so totally ambiguous as to be impossible to prove their being met (or not). The left has all but decimated any chances they had for holding their majority in 2008 and have absolutely no chance to grab the WH. All this liberal press mania about the inevitability of the lib surge continuing is nothing but whistling past the grave yard. America loves it's military and will long remember the Dem attempts to use them as a pawn in their political aspirations. The entire future of the Democrat Party is wholly dependent on us losing the war in Iraq. In trying to attain this goal they will destroy themselves. What we are seeing now is the equivilent of a "Hail Mary" pass from the libs

Polls, smolls. The will be a compromise. Bush will not receive the clean bill he wanted. I agree that there will probably be benchmarks in the new bill, but I don't share your optimism on what form they will take. Remember, the Dems must be able to claim victory as well as the WH, so each side will have things in the bill that the other side doesn't like.

I wish that were true. The Dems will be heavily favored to retain control over Congress in 2008. It took us 40 years to gain control over the House and the Dems 12 years to take it back. There is no way we are going to get it back in two years. And we have far more Senate seats at risk in 2008 than the Dems have. If the war in Iraq is still problematic, the Dems will use it against us.

Wishing doesn't make it so.

Bush is not going to receive a clean bill. Watch what is in it.

They were forced to totally strip the timetable out as well as the majority of everything else they wanted leaving only these meaningless benchmarks in so they could at least TRY to claim a partial victory.
No pork?
For his part, President George W. Bush agreed to accept some $17 billion in added spending so long as there were not restrictions on the military campaign.
