Utah allows guns on college campuses

SALT LAKE CITY- Brent Tenney says he feels pretty safe when he goes to class at the University of Utah, but he takes no chances. He brings a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic with him every day. "It's not that I run around scared all day long, but if something happens to me, I do want to be prepared," said the 24-year-old business major, who has a concealed-weapons permit and takes the handgun everywhere but church.

After the massacre at Virginia Tech that left 33 dead, some have suggested that the carnage might have been lower if a student or professor with a gun had stepped in.

As states and colleges across the country review their gun policies in light of the tragedy, many in Utah are proud to have the nation's only state law that expressly allows the carrying of concealed weapons at public colleges.

"If government can't protect you, you should have the right to protect yourself," said Republican state Sen. Michael Waddoups.

You’d expect a lot of rampage shootings at Hi Power matches because of all the deadly Assault Weapons there.

And the carnage at IPSC shoots or Steel Challenge must be frightful because of all of the mags loaded to the top.

Good for Unif Utah! How long have they allowed concealed carry? A recent thing, anyone know?

An off-duty Ogden police officer carrying a concealed weapon—in violation of mall policy—pinned down Talovic with gunfire until other police arrived.

Interesting....I wonder if they are rethinking that policy?

Nine years here without figuring out that clicking the excerpt source gives you the rest of the article? Wow! :-)

We have the God-given right to protect ourselves. It's goverment that is trying to take that right away.

Me either.

But to hear the LDS leaders and apologists, the Danites have never existed. A not so plausible deniability however.

In Wyoming I've seen on duty and off duty police take their guns to church. Nobody objects, and probably don't notice.

There may be other "concealed carry" there. The "concealed" means that you do not see it.

Don’t screw with the Mormons is the moral of this tale.

I used to carry a little AMT 380 when I was in college. POS gun unless you worked on it but it was tiny.

To the best of my recollection, a group of churches agreed to not allow concealed weapons in places of worship in accordance with Utah law. Each denomination “signed” on. This includes folks with valid concealed weapons/gun permits but I am sure it allows police officers to carry if they so choose. I seem to recall that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints asked it members with permits to refrain from carrying at meetings. This only applies to the state of Utah to the best of my knowledge as it meets a state law requirement. I should probably have researched this better to give a more correct answer.
I don’t recall if Utah is an open carry state.

Back to lurking.

RE: my question about carrying in Church.....I saw a notice on our Church bulletin board saying our Church was “gun free” and I’ve always wondered about that....it does NOT make me feel safe....and my husband ALWAYS forgets to carry when we go.....(we don’t carry the guns much anyway - they’re mostly just at home)...although, we might think about doing so more now....

As the liberals rightly predicted, we hear about a firearm accident in a Utah college almost daily. Wild West, donchaknow. Kids losing their tempor and shooting other kids in a drunken stupor. Yep. Utah really should overturn their unworkable law to allow students to carry guns on campus, what with how violent and dangerous it is and all... </sar>
