Be wary of food items from China
The St. Petersburg Times ^ | April 24, 2007 | PETER KOVACS

Lost amid the anxiety surrounding the tainted U.S. pet food supply is this sobering reality: It's not just pet owners who should be worried. The uncontrolled distribution of low-quality imported food ingredients, mainly from China, poses a grave threat to public health worldwide.

Essential ingredients, such as vitamins used in many packaged foods, arrive at U.S. ports from China and, as recent news reports have underscored, are shipped without inspection to food and beverage distributors and manufacturers. Although they are used in relatively small quantities, these ingredients carry enormous risks for American consumers. One pound of tainted wheat gluten could, if undetected, contaminate as much as a thousand pounds of food.

I found the information about Vitamin C interesting. I had no idea that many of our vitamins came from China.

On a related topic, just what the HELL does our FDA do anymore?

I wouldn’t stop with just food items. My wife brought home some dishes made in china which were supposedly microwave safe. They contained metal, and most probably lead. Tossed them all in the garbage.

This should not be a surprise to anybody that ever visited a factory ‘over there’ OR to anybody that understands the corporate pressure to trim expenses at all cost (pun intended).

'just what the HELL does our FDA do anymore?'

Exactly what they've always done. Take taxpayers' money and play at being bureaucrats, just like the rest of our government. See my tag line.

You posted your “ping list” in the comments box instead of the “TO:” box..........I’ve done that before, too......

That should have been reported to your local public health authority so those products could be pulled off the market.

I have been waiting for this to happen. Maybe this is the beginning of the story.

Corn Starch and Sweet Potato Starch were the only items previously named that I could find. They are “like” wheat gluten and could be equally contaminated.

Keep me posted to your findings?

I didn’t know about the vitamins, either. How much do we consumers not know about the provenence of our foodstuffs?

It’s not like it shows up on labels, except for obvious things, like farm raised shrimp, etc.

Walmart advertises 2” faux wood plastic blinds that are lead free. What does that say about the Home Depot blinds?
