Global warming may spur wind shear, sap hurricanes

By Jim Loney

MIAMI (Reuters) - Global warming could increase a climate phenomenon known as wind shear that inhibits Atlantic hurricanes, a potentially positive result of climate change, according to new research released on Tuesday.

The study, to be published on Wednesday in Geophysical Research Letters, found that climate model simulations show a "robust increase" in wind shear in the tropical Atlantic during the 21st century from global warming.

Wind shear, a difference in wind speed or direction at different altitudes, tends to tear apart tropical cyclones, preventing nascent ones from growing and already-formed hurricanes from becoming the monster storms that cause the most damage.

The effect of global warming on wind shear is similar to the impact of El Nino, the periodic eastern Pacific warm-water phenomenon that tends to put a damper on Atlantic storms. The sudden development of El Nino was credited for an unexpectedly mild Atlantic season last year, when only 10 storms formed.

It sound like they are trying to have it both ways. Global warming both causes and destroys hurricanes now.

your exactly correct. If we get bad storms its global warming, if we don’t (like last year) its because of global warming. Heck the recent snow in California and snow over easter was also cause by global warming.

So that is why there weren’t more hurricanes last year than the previous year. Global warming actually prevented some of them. Unless of course we end up having more hurricanes THIS year, in which case global warming caused them.

I’m sure globull warming will also cause more asteroids to hit the earth, and much sooner than originally estimated too!

How can an increase of 1/100 of a degree a year be so determinative?

Hurricanes up season - studies show caused by global warming

Hurrincanes down season - studies show caused by global warming

Whatever it takes, whatever it costs, to get carbon credit trading enacted, they will pay it and a scientist will take pay offs to provide cover.

It’s pretty easy to do when “modelling.”

They have to cover their bets after last year’s dearth of hurricanes.

Especially on the CO2 content of the atmosphere which is .04% of the total atmosphere.

SHEEEEZE!

It sound like they are trying to have it both ways. Global warming both causes and destroys hurricanes now.

They know it's going to be the most devastating thing in all of human history. They just don't know how. You only have ten more years to vote a liberal in to redistribute your wealth to someone else but if you don't they'll give you another ten year extension.

If there are more hurricanes, it is because of Global Warming.

If there are fewer hurricanes, it is because of Global Warming.

If there is exactly the same number of hurricanes, it is because of...

Well, you get the idea...

Actually, fewer hurricanes would be a bad thing, because that's one of the mechanisms for evening out the distribution of heat energy in the atmosphere. They cool the tropics and warm up the northern latitudes.

I predict this will be their next alarum as the devastation of MMGW marches on.

(Pass me another drink with an umbrella, would you? clink Thanks.)
