On your Freeper homepage, Jedi, you write, “Every Christian should be a Creationist.”

Nope, sorry. This Christian is beginning to think this whole debate was dreamed up by H. L. Mencken to discredit the intelligence of the faithful.

And it may be true that Darwin’s concept of evolution will remain a theory, unproven and unprovable, or that another theory will come along that more completely explains the dynamics of life over time, but the approach used to formulate that theory is based on the gathering of empirical evidence, careful reasoning, thought, not literal interpretation of sacred text. If we relied upon the Old Testament as the wellspring of science, there would be no light bulb, no cure for smallpox, no anything.

Faith and reason are not incompatible. The Bible is not a science textbook. Genesis is clearly, obviously allegorical.

The evolution of the human mind, or consciousness—also suggested by Chas Darwin—would not be possible to prove one way or the other. Those working in brain science and Artificial Intelligence are proceeding on the assumption that intelligence and self-awareness can be put into an autonomous robot, which would assume the evolution of the mind is at least possible.

“The Bible is not a science textbook. Genesis is clearly, obviously allegorical.”

I agree with the first statement, but not the second. The Bible is not intended to be a “science” textbook (as science is currently defined). However, it is intended to be statements of absolute truth.

Please be careful to not so quickly toss out at least a semi-literal interpretation of Genesis. Adam and Eve are portrayed as real persons from which the entire human population desended. If Adam is not a literal person, but an allegory, then the “fall of man” is not real and there would be no need for a Christ to redeem that fallen race. If one cannot trust certain crucial points of scripture, one may as well toss it all. Do you consider the New Testament accounts of Christ’s death, burial, and ressurection to be allegory? I hope not, but if not then why not? Since the New Testament clearly states Christ’s purpose - and Christ Himself acknowledge the literalness of Adam - is Jesus Christ a liar? What can one trust from scripture? You start tossing out scripture, and you toss the basis for faith.
