Hearing Footsteps: Thompson and Obama Gain on Rudy and Hillary
Townhall.com ^ | April 14, 2007 | Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

Posted on 04/15/2007 4:27:07 PM PDT by Josh Painter

There was good news this week for... soon-to-be candidate Fred Thompson. The Los Angeles Times survey of April 5-9 found that... Thompson had moved into second place... in the GOP presidential primary. This is an amazing showing for an undeclared candidate...

The surprisingly positive results for Thompson in the L.A. Times survey may be the final impetus that convinces him to jump into the race. There have been several recent indications that Thompson is abut to declare.

First, his public disclosure that he was diagnosed with lymphoma several years ago and is now in remission could only have been made to pave the way for his entry in the Republican primary. A potential candidate would have to get that information out before someone leaked it. And.. if Thompson was not a candidate, he would have no reason to divulge that personal information.

Thompson has also scheduled a number of high profile appearances in Washington...

The vibes in Washington certainly suggest that Thompson is about to jump into the race, probably declaring his candidacy in May...

The Thompson numbers are important in two respects: They show that McCain is continuing to slip and slide as his campaign seems to lose momentum every day. But they also matter because Newt Gingrich, the other looming presence over the race, is badly trailing behind the undeclared Thompson, who seems to be picking up Newt's voters. So if Newt stays out until September, as he has vowed he would, the survey indicates that Fred would obliterate him in the meantime and make it all but impossible for him to run. It looks like Republicans are still looking for an ideal candidate and take Thompson quite seriously.

If Thompson were to run, he would fight an all-out battle with Giuliani for conservative Republicans...

I put the list of link (Fredipedia) on my personal page at the suggestion of several FReepers. I had been posting the entire list once on each Fred Thompson thread, and moving it to my personal page allowed me to save a great deal of FR’s bandwidth by posting one simple link instead of a long page of over 100 links.

Yours is the first complaint I’ve received about my personal page, but I suspect it has less to do with FR than it does with whatever candidate you are backing, who obviously isn’t Fred Thompson.

This was all done publically and was discussed in FR threads. I haven’t had any complaints from the site’s moderators or top management.

Since you feel so strongly about the matter, why don’t you take it up with them?

May I direct your attention to the FR poll on the right-hand side of your screen?

“Who do you support in the GOP presidential primaries?”

The results so far:

Fred Thompson - 42.9%
Duncan Hunter - 11.3%
Rudy Giuliani - 10.5%
Newt Gingrich - 9.9%
Ron Paul - 7.5%
Tom Tancredo - 6.2%
Mit Romney - 4.6%
Undecided/pass - 4.4%
Other - 1.4%
John McCain - 1.3%

Is this what’s got you down?

“Yours is the first complaint I’ve received about my personal page..”

Not a complaint.

I intended it to be a compliment. Please reread.

Everyone better be ready for the media onslaught if Fred is the man against Obama...

The media will do everything to frame Fred as 'old and tired' and Obama and the 'new and vibrant' alternative for change.

Start watching the pics that are 'chosen' to run...

I suspect Fred will rise to the occasion, in a manner similar to Ronald Reagan:

“It was old-friend humor that came to the rescue, of course, when he was on the ropes after a poor showing against Mondale in their first debate in 1984. With the media speculating whether Reagan’s age had made him unfit for office, he put the issue to bed by unleashing, ‘I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.’ Mondale could only laugh along with the audience.”

“Why did all the Duncan Hunter fans abandon him immediately to an undeclared candidate?

I thought there were principles out there?”

What does that have to do with my comment about conservatives not caring about what RINO’s think? What’s wrong with people changing their mind on who they want to support? If Fred gets in, some people will switch their support to him, including some Rudy supporters. I don’t understand why you consider that “lacking principles”. Please explain it to me.

BTW, I read your homepage—cool. I can’t imagine, from what you wrote, that you’d support Rudy. Am I wrong?

Rudy is not one of my top choices. Unfortunately, I don't feel great about any of the alternatives so far. I just don't want us to be so frustrated with our choices that we become too polarized.

The only thing that I'm certain about, is that we will not have a perfect candidate. But we must eventually support someone to stop Hillary/Obama.

hehe...never thought I’d see that graphic again after 06!

I just pointed the domain to the same IP that FR is pointed to.

If you go to www.fredrepublic.com, there’s a redirect that will take you to freErepublic, but if you link directly to the forum, it works properly.

I think Fred will be more stronger on the WOT than Rudy. So I think Morris is wrong there too, I guess Morris doesn’t know that Rudy doesn’t criticize Bill Clinton for his short comings on fighting terror in the 90’s.

Morris is the one who tells us conservatives all the time that Clinton was flat out wrong when it came to the WOT.

I think Fred will be stronger too.

Maybe I should email ole Dick a link to that video of Fred pre-9/11.

Did you see Bo Dietl screaming out Morris the the other day? That was just awesome television right there!
