Former Iraqi Minister says Hussein's regime used jihadist groups to counter Shi'ites

A former Defense and Finance Minister of post-invasion Iraq, Ali A. Allawi has completed and just released a book titled "The Occupation of Iraq: Winning the War, Losing the Peace" that talks about the inner workings of many things that took place in post-invasion Iraqi government.

Amir Taheri's review of the book for Asharq al Alawsat reveals that Allawi's points to some of the roots of today's violence in Iraq going back over a decade to when Saddam Hussein used violent groups for his own domestic purposes.

One of the most interesting revelations in this book is Allawi's account of the emergence of Arab Sunni radicalism in Iraq.

He (Allawi) shows that the first Jihadi groups were patronized by Saddam to counter-balance Shi'ite influence from Iran. Saddam may not have entered into a formal alliance with Al Qaeda. However, as Allawi shows, he was in league with Al Qaeda-style Jihadis, such as Jund al-Islam (Army of Islam) and Ansar al-Islam (Victors of Islam), for a decade before he was toppled.

Kurdish officials have also testified that Ansar al Islam was also employed by Hussein's regime to counter their leadership.

Allawi's book is now available for order through Amazon.com and, based on the reviews, the book appears to be a fascinating read.

Thanks. Very interesting... and known by FReepers, real Americans and those not brainwashed by the media long before.

BTW I wonder in what relation the author of the book is with Ayad Allawi the former PM.

I wondered that and I did some research on the guy. Saw no mention of any relation.

Right. Said another way - the PR battle has been lost.

Perhaps he is related to Werda Allawi, an unsuccessful Iraqi explorer.

Actually the polls still show that around 60% of Americans think Saddam had “strong links” to al Qaeda. I don’t think people are fooled as easily as the MSM would like.

Thanks for the ping. I’d been wondering what you were working on.

I’ll get his book. I do have a question. I thought that some of the jihadist groups you mentioned were pretty clearly linked with AQ. Am I just remembering that wrong?

No you are right. Some of those groups are and were close to al Qaeda.

I have a few more posts coming soon. Did you get my one called “Carbomb Diplomacy”?

I think that’s one I got and then didn’t respond to and wanted to; it’s still in my e-mail as well.

You have no idea how glad I am that you’re still working on this.

I send all your stuff to my e-mail group and they share with their friends. It’s the only way we can get around the media and I hope that other freepers are doing the same thing.

I appreciate you doing that and that’s why I try to cite everything and provide links.

I am actually going to do a post soon on the terrorists/Islamic militants that Hussein actually did arrest. Though I think and know he was a sponsor terrorism I find the need to be thorough and show what I’ve found about those who either did arrest or attempted to. These conflicts seemed limited to those who he viewed as problems to his rule (aka it was going to bring additional U.S. attention to his activities or they were causing local problems in Iraq and were legitimately against his secular regime), not because he was opposed to terrorism in general.

I’m glad you’re still sending stuff via e-mail because a few things are going on here and company visiting us, etc., that might limit my time on FR and I don’t want your stuff lost in the pings.

Talk with you later and thanks for all your hard work!

Here's info from my files:

In in 1998, an Arab intelligence officer, who knows Saddam personally, predicted in Newsweek: "Very soon you will be witnessing large-scale terrorist activity run by the Iraqis." The Arab official said these terror operations would be run under "false flags" --spook-speak for front groups--including bin Laden's organization.

Then there were the predictions by an Iraqi with ties to Iraqi intelligence, Naeem Abd Mulhalhal, in Qusay's own newspaper several weeks before the attacks that stated bin Laden would “demolish the Pentagon after he destroys the White House and ”bin Laden would strike America “on the arm that is already hurting.” (referencing a second IRAQI sponsored attack on the World Trade Center). Another reference to New York was “[bin Laden] will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra everytime he hears his songs.” (e.g., “New York, New York”) which identified New York, New York as a target. Mulhalhal also stated, “The wings of a dove and the bullet are all but one and the same in the heart of a believer." which references an airplane attack.

The Arabic language daily newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabic also cited the cooperation between Iraq, bin Laden and Al December 1998 editorial, which predicted that “President Saddam Hussein, whose country was subjected to a four day air strike, will look for support in taking revenge on the United States and Britain by cooperating with Saudi oppositionist Osama Bin-Laden, whom the United States considers to be the most wanted person in the world.” This info is in the link provided below. How could these people have had foreknowledge without Iraq being involved?

Source for this info

Warning...slow loading .pdf file. This was from a lawsuit filed against Iraq after 9/11...the court ruled against Iraq.

There was also another lawsuit filed by the family of John O’Neill (a former FBI agent who captured Ramzi Yousef after the 1993 WTC bombings) after he died in the WTC on 9/11. His personal files from his years of traveling around the world investigating al-Qaeda are were used as evidence in the lawsuit. The evidence includes documents unearthed in the headquarters of the Mukhabarat (Iraq's intelligence service) and information gleaned from the interrogation of both al-Qaeda and Iraqi prisoners. (Link below). It also quotes Vincent Cannistraro, the former CIA counter-terrorism chief, who stated in October 2000 that Iraq had been wanting to carry out terrorist attacks, and that the Iraqi military had been in contact with Osama bin Laden.

We know from these IIS documents that beginning in 1992 the former Iraqi regime regarded bin Laden as an Iraqi Intelligence asset. We know from IIS documents that the former Iraqi regime provided safe haven and financial support to an Iraqi who has admitted to mixing the chemicals for the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. We know from IIS documents that Saddam Hussein agreed to Osama bin Laden's request to broadcast anti-Saudi propaganda on Iraqi state-run television. We know from IIS documents that a "trusted confidante" of bin Laden stayed for more than two weeks at a posh Baghdad hotel as the guest of the Iraqi Intelligence Service.
