Home-Cooked Pet Food Not Always Safe

Home-cooked pet food not always safe

TORONTO, April 3 (UPI) -- The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association says pet owners need to be aware of the risks of serving home-cooked foods to their pets.

Recent deaths from tainted pet food has increased the appeal of home-cooking for some pet owners, but the CVMA says people need to do some research first, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

One of the biggest concerns is a risk of salmonella poisoning associated with raw pet food diets.

While animals in the wild have always eaten and survived on raw flesh, CVMA spokesman Danny Joffe told the CBC that dogs in nature aren't "sleeping in our beds, licking our faces and eating in our kitchens."

The CMVA says a healthy recipe for dogs includes cooked meat combined with potato or rice and a mineral supplement.

The CBC said dogs accidentally fed chocolate risk cardiac failure, while grapes and raisins have been found to cause kidney failure. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener in chewing gum and diabetic products, can lower a dog's blood sugar and lead to liver failure.

Our newspaper had a recipe for dogfood in the paper yesterday. Meatloaf in the shape of a bone, garnished with cheese.

Someone has too much time on their hands.

Is it just me--or is this whole thing skewed. The title says "Home Cooked dog food not always safe--then talks about the perils of uncooked food for dogs--nary a word about cooked food being unsafe.

All my dogs have eaten table scraps all their lives. I'm really happy now that the commercial dog food supply is so tainted, and I don't have to worry about it!

I wonder how many of the elderly that we were told a few years back had to eat dog food because they couldn't afford food have died from this? Hummmm!

I’ll let my dog know this news as soon as he gets his head out of the toilet.

My dogs have one baked chicken leg quarter for dinner every day. I have four dogs and this has worked well for 10, 9, 8, 7 years. They have all the Purina One (Lamb & Rice) dry food they want also. To see my crew, click on my name.

Do you give them the bones too? I’ve heard conflicting reports on whether cooked or raw bones are better.

From Article"The CMVA says a healthy recipe for dogs includes cooked meat combined with potato or rice and a mineral supplement."

I must admit the title is somewhat confusing, but they did tell us WHAT IS GOOD TO COOK FOR OUR DOGS.

I didn't realize until recently that left over stew could kill my dog. Reason being is most stews have onion in them and onion can kill dogs also.

The best home made recipe for dogs:

Cooked ground beef, white rice and a clove or two of crushed garlic.

Raw bones are better. Chicken bones become extremely brittle when cooked and lodge in the throat like little wood slivers causing great discomfort.

Don’t let dogs eat raw Salmon. I had to haul my ranch dog 22 miles to the vet for treatment several years ago...

Hey. We made homemade dog bones on Saturday. Basically cooked rolled oats, parmesan, flour, milk and some garlic.

Rolled it out and used a dog bone shaped cookie cutter and baked them in the oven. Smelled heavenly.

Yeah, I guess I had a little time on my hands...(slinks away) :)

Cat is always better in the oven, rather than on the grill.

Oh, this is a thread about cooking food for your pets. I thought it was about cooking your pets for food.

According to this article, garlic isn’t safe for dogs or cats:

The veterinarian group also warned that many common foods are not safe for pets, including salt, garlic, onions, grapes and chocolate.

Xylitol, an artificial sweetener in chewing gum and diabetic products, can lower a dog's blood sugar and lead to liver failure.

Well, be sure not to add any birch tree bark or leaves to the pet food. And don't brush your dog's teeth with certain toothpaste...
