Nichols' parents cling to hope that son's life is spared

The Brian Nichols case will stand still for almost six more months.

That's six months the victims' families also will stand still, waiting for justice and for answers. March 11, 2005, was most likely the worst day of their lives — three women lost husbands, a daughter lost a mother and scores of others saw their lives changed forever.

Brian Nichols (shown in court in February) is described by parents as remorseful, by jail officials as dangerous.

But the six-month reprieve also gives Brian Nichols' parents time for hope — hope that their son will be allowed to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence for one of the state's most horrifying killing sprees

The money quote:

Since that ignominious day, they say, he has converted to Islam and prays six times a day. He reads voraciously, consuming the Bible, the Quran, Nelson Mandela's autobiography and the novels of James Patterson and Tom Clancy. He is teaching himself Arabic and calculus and boning up on his high school Spanish. He has become a long-distance math tutor for his 15-year-old daughter, finally building a relationship with the child he never got to know until after the shootings.

I am sure his victims' parents would have wished for the same thing. What he did was not only cold blooded murder, but an assault on the U.S. justice system. The quicker this guy disappears from the land of the living, the better. The story is propaganda.

Of course it's propaganda. It's the Atlanta Urinal-Constipation. Expect nothing less from Cynthia Tucker's newsrag.

Have any of the victim's families come forward saying they have forgiven him?

I can't feel bad for this man...sorry Rhonda.
I will never figure out why some people care more for the perpetrators of crime than they do for the victims and their families.

Not that I am aware of. This has been a farce in the making since he was captured. I was saying at the time that the best outcome would have been for the U.S. Attorney to prosecute first (because of the murder of the ICE agent). Paul Howard and the Fulton DA's office are incompetent - the U.S. Attorney has no allegiance to Fulton County, and could, as a byproduct of the murder prosecution, blow the roof off the Fulton County DA/Sheriff's Department/etc.

But rather than going the Federal route - the local DA has it, and to his credit he does not seem to be willing to cave in and accept a "life means life" plea.

unHoly $h!t !!!

And I do mean $h!t ... this guy has adorned himself with more regalia than Mr T.

P.S. to Christians ... reading the bible is not to be construed with being some kind of good guy ... contrasted with all the rest of the $h!t, he's looking for ways to justify himself, not to accept Jesus.

With all of the official eye witnesses (sworn court officers and policemen/sheriff's deputies, etc.) and VIDEO of this savage on the run with the murder weapon, we should NOT have to waste so many tax dollars and have our legal system made a mockery of.

This animal should have been summarily executed by my state of GA already.

'Course, what can we expect from Fulton county (FU-CO SHOULD stand for the OBVIOUS... F'd Up County), which is run by corrupt and inept inner-city liberal (criminal-coddling, particularly black criminals) bureaucrats?

I see your point ... sort of like living in a garage doesn't make you a car and going to church doesn't make you a Christian.

To protect society, may his parent's hopes be crushed. The sooner the better.

What is with these parents?

My parents taught me right from wrong. They also taught me that part of repentance is to accept one's punishment.

Nichol's parents should urge their son to confess his crimes and accept the appropriate punishment (death in this case).

Isn't that interesting? Converted to the cult of death while in prison for the murder of 4 people. Sounds like he found a spiritual home for his evil heart.

Why does it matter whether they have or not? You can't forgive someone for something they did to someone else. The only ones who can forgive him are DEAD.

"Forgiveness" is one of the foolish things that some Christians think settles all debts.

Forgiveness benefits the forgiver, not the perpetrator.

Study after study has shown that the death penalty has no effect on crime.... when it is delayed.

Promptly and quickly applied, it is a great deterrent.
