Taken by Hinode's Solar Optical Telescope on Nov. 20, 2006, this image reveals the structure of the solar magnetic field rising vertically from a sunspot. (Hinode JAXA/NASA/Reuters)

I saw some of the images earlier and it was chaotic.
The violently moving flares reminded me of the old
science play with a magnet and metal shavings.
Mr. Gore could not have been happy to have those
solar ob(e)jections as a back drop today. I think that is
why this story and it's images have received so little
attention from the MSM....JJ61

This reminds me of an old joke from the 1960's: The United States ambassador to the United Nations stands up in the General Assembly and states that his country will send men to the moon. Not to be outdone, the Soviet Union's representative jumps up and shouts that the Russians plan to send cosmonauts to Mars. While the Russian ambassador takes his seat, the Polish ambassador rises to address the body of nations. He declares that his countrymen will travel to the Sun! Pandemonium breaks loose, as everyone shouts "you'll be burned up," "they'll die" and etc... The Polish diplomat waves them away and says: "don't worry, we're going at night!"

They saw twisting plumes of gas rising from the Sun's corona and reacting with the star's magnetic field, a process that releases energy and may power solar storms and coronal mass ejections, which in turn affect the Earth. Heretic! Heretic! Heretic!

Every time we think we understand something completely it turns out we don't. To me scientific endeavor is one of the most important, astounding, and uplifting aspects of the human spirit and the search for ultimate truth.

For settled science we sure are discovering new things :^)
This is huge, the sun emits more energy than previously thought in regions of high activity. Maybe those Maunder minimum guys were on to something?
