I met an Iranian-American professor last summer at a faculty get-together. Somehow we got onto the topic of freedom in Iran and he lamented how Islam had absolutely destroyed so many great civilizations in the Middle East. Persia was a world power and admired for its art and culture. He said almost apologetically that he was a muslim and he wished his religion didn't have such a reputation of creating nothing out of something.
