I met an Iranian-American professor last summer at a faculty get-together. Somehow we got onto the topic of freedom in Iran and he lamented how Islam had absolutely destroyed so many great civilizations in the Middle East. Persia was a world power and admired for its art and culture. He said almost apologetically that he was a muslim and he wished his religion didn't have such a reputation of creating nothing out of something.

Among the young people in Iran, grown up under the Mullahs, there is a huge amount of discontent. A top Imam too, recently converted to Christianity (and after spending time in prison, has fled the country...). The stranglehold grip of Islam over it's adherents may well be starting to crack in, of all places, Iran--ruled by fanatics.

He sounds like he's on the verge of enlightenment.
