Zeljko Komsic

The couple said their baby would be named after Mr Komsic

One of Bosnia's three-member presidency has helped a woman in labour by escorting her car to hospital at high speed with his motorcade.

Zeljko Komsic noticed a distressed couple driving fast near the town of Maglaj late on Saturday.

Suad Ibrahimovic said he and his wife, Jasminka, were so grateful that they would name the baby after him.

Bosnia's presidency rotates between Mr Komsic, a Croat, and Serb and Bosnian Muslim representatives.

Complications

When Mr Komsic noticed the couple, Mr Ibrahimovic explained their predicament and the president ordered his vehicles to escort the car at speed.

"I have no words to thank Mr Komsic, he saved my wife and my son," Mr Ibrahimovic said.

"Komsic even helped carry my wife into the hospital."

Doctors had told the couple that they would have to travel to the hospital in a town 30 miles (50km) away because of possible complications with the birth.

Mr Komsic's spokeswoman, Irena Kljajic, said that the president had acted as any normal human being would have done in a similar situation.

"They turned the sirens on and helped them reach a hospital in Zenica fast," she said.

Good to have a story of peace among the ethnicities in that region.

Jebem mu mater komjunisticku. He's a communist, an atheist, not a Croatian at all. We didn't vote for him, the Muslims did. He is to us what Jovan Divjak is for you guys.
