Gore Responds to Charges His House Uses Too Much Electricity

Al Gore responded to charges that his house consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, with the new Oscar winner saying he has taken many steps to reduce the carbon footprint in his home.

The former vice president and former presidential candidate told Thinkprogress.org that he has signed up for 100 percent green power through Green Power Switch, installed solar panels and uses compact fluorescent bulbs and other energy-saving technology. He said he also buys carbon offsets — a service that tries to reduce the net carbon emissions of individuals or organizations indirectly, through proxies that reduce their emissions and/or increase their absorption of greenhouse gases.

"What Mr. Gore has asked is that every family calculate their carbon footprint and try to reduce it as much as possible," said Thinkprogress.org. "Once they have done so, he then advocates that they purchase offsets, as the Gores do, to bring their footprint down to zero."

Gore was responding to a report issued by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, which, citing figured from the Nashville Electric Service, said that since last August, Gore burned through 22,619 kilowatt-hours at his house — more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. His average monthly electric bill topped $1,359, the report said.

Maybe the leftists could reduce their personal carbon footprint to zero by ceasing breathing.

What is this "offsets" thing? As I understand it - Gore can use as much fossil fuel as he wants - as long as some poor jerk in the third world doesn't use any - that averages him out to low use? Is that what that means? What a crock!

Socialism and elitism in action. Rather than do any actual reducing, Gore is hiding behind a bunch of doubletalk and unverifiable organizations and options. It would make Stalin blush.

Isn't he missing the point? He has taken extreme measures to reduce his "carbon footprint" and STILL he uses obscene amounts of energy every month.

Apparently, it doesn't matter if he's actually using a reasonable amount of energy or not. What matters is that he TRIES and that his heart is in the right place. Once those goals are achieved, his actual performance is inconsequetial.

Socialism in one lesson.

Buying "offsets" seems eerily similar to the old practice of sinners being able to buy "indulgences" as a payment for their sins.

""Once they have done so, he then advocates that they purchase offsets, as the Gores do, to bring their footprint down to zero.""

The whole business of carbon offsets is a laughable scam.

Just a way for guilt ridden liberals to write a check and make their "enviro guilt" go away.

Its not like these companys selling carbon offsets actually reach into the air and remove the pollutants. They are really nothing more than 21st century snake oil, designed to fleece naive rich liberals.

Kind of like a nature-worshipper's version of Indulgences. You pays your money to buy off some other poor slob to "save carbon" while you use as much as you want. Works fine, as long as you've got money, which Gore obviously does. The poor slobs have to make due without any luxuries (or necessities).

And guess who gets to "Sell" these "Credits"? POLITICIANS...

Need a few more?
Send a few strategicly placed bucks to your freindly Democrat "Environmentalist", and they suddenly "Find" a few more credits to give you, or deny to a non-donating company...
