IMHO, McCain is history. He is playing both sides of the aisle as usual. His loyalty appears only in a mirror.

Even if he disagreed with Rummy on the war effort, he should have kept his political mouth shut. He is no Republican or a conservative. Hard to tell what he really stands for or believes in.

The White House backed Rumsfeld but was careful not to criticize McCain in doing so.

I just don't understand why the White House is so reluctant to criticize Democrats?

There were mistakes made in the early days of the Iraq War, no doubt about that, however as long as McNamara was a SecDef, Rummy is safe from that charge....

I have believed for quite some time that McCain is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which is no big problem in a senator but could be dangerous in a president.

OTOH, I'm not sure why the White House feels compelled to interject itself into this. Rumsfeld is gone. Let history judge, and focus on winning this war.

"Who led to the transformation of the Department of Defense."

By Rumsfeld's own admission, transformation didn't reach 50%. One wonders if it was even the right tranformation since the force size was not increased sufficiently.

I am really glad the White House did this...I just wish they would have slam dunked McCain in doing it.

McCain has never been Bush's "friend".

I wanted to post this one, as it's more appropriate to how I feel about McCain, but I didn't want to offend anyone or get in trouble.

It doesn't matter to me what this high falutin' McCain says or does. I won't vote for his taxing, pro-illegal immigrant, stupid judiciary monkeying a**.
McCain is not going to be the nominee. He's burned too many net roots conservative bridges.

Everyone, including McPain, the White House and State Dept. is using Rummy's performance as an excuse for their own incompetence.

What is this current fascination with "worst ever" ? If McCain endorses the hyperbole, it will that much more be used to condemn him for having been a big supporter of Iraq War, among those so inclined.

Trial and error, and midcourse adjustments have been used in every war (and football game). Rumsfeld took some heat for the "error" part. Fine. But McCain must know the hyperbole raises the future stakes for the Commander-In-Chief and civilian leadership to attempt difficult things. Presidents becoming more risk averse is not a good outcome.

"I think that Donald Rumsfeld will go down in history as one of the worst secretaries of defense in history," the Arizona senator and former Vietnam War veteran said on the campaign trail in South Carolina on Monday.

Bastard!

He's just joined Kerry, Kennedy, and Murtha in whacking our military and pissing off Conservative guys like me who admired Rumsfeld.

Just what the hell does he figure he's going to gain by stabbing Rummy in the back?

McCain isn't fit to shine Rumsfeld's shoes. Rumsfeld is a Great American.....McCain is a traitor to his sworn oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.
