Iran's Elite Guards to Hold War Games

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards will launch their second war games in a month on Monday, just days ahead of a U.N. deadline regarding Iran's nuclear program.

The Revolutionary Guards will begin three days of ground maneuvers, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported Sunday

"The guards will practice various kinds of fighting tactics including tactics of asymmetrical warfare," the report said without elaborating.

The exercises are to take place in 16 of Iran's 30 provinces, IRNA reported. Some 60,000 troops were expected to participate _ in line with past exercises. The games were planned before the United Nations Security Council approved economic sanctions against Iran on Dec. 23.

In December, the council gave Iran 60 days to halt uranium enrichment, otherwise it will consider taking additional measures beyond the sanctions in place. Enrichment is necessary to produce fuel for nuclear reactors, but also to make nuclear weapons.

As tensions rise over Iran's nuclear standoff with the West, the United States and Iran have pursued an escalating series of military moves, with Washington sending more aircraft carriers to the region and Iran responding with more frequent maneuvers.

The Revolutionary Guards is an elite military corps with more than 200,000 members and its own naval and air forces. It is independent of the regular armed forces and controlled directly by the supreme leader. It oversees vital interests such as oil and natural gas installations and the nation's missile arsenal.

Gee, if we can find out exactly where these "games" are being held, it might be fun to interject some live-fire realism.

The Revolutionary Guards is an elite military corps . . .

A description meant to bring on SLUD, which somehow doesn’t.

I saw a post here recently about the Revolutionary Guards from either Reuters or APF that refered to them multiple times as "elite". I see the same thing here.

I know the Revolutionary Guards are fanatical, but that translate to "elite"? Or is this just more propaganda?

"The guards will practice various kinds of fighting tactics including tactics of asymmetrical warfare,"-

If that includes "live fire" practice of suicide bombing then knock yourselves out.

Well... they are certainly no match to any normal US unit, but they are better equipped, trained (and indoctrinated) than the rest of the Iranian Armed Forces. They also are politcally and economically powerfull. I guess this makes them sort of "Elite", (elite rather in the sense of elitist French liberal snobs...)

All you have to remember is Saddam Hussien's "elite Republican Guards" which vanished like hot spit on a griddle when any American unit started to get close.

Not much. Still here, working for a major corporation in beautiful downtown Tokyo. Things have improved in the employment situation. Further details on request.

And while I like your tagline, I hope you're not including the Gipper in that.

I'll send you a FReepmail with my current email addy in case you've lost it.

Of course the Gipper was not included in that!

But G.H.W. Bush and Ford were...and Truman is marginal.

If I was an elite Revolutinary Guard member, I'd be walking everywhere I'd go: certainly not taking a bus or airliner!

shaking my head at the propaganda.....

"elite".... seems to be placed whenever muslim targets present themselves...

Isn't it odd that the same words are always together.... "Outraged" -"muslim"

"elite"-"Republican Guard"

"holy city of "-"insert generic sh#t hole city in the middle east"

"muslim holy site"-"any muslim base of operation in aforementioned sh#t hole city in middle east"

"muslim holy month of-" - "insert any month that United States Forces are kicking the cr@p out of "elite" muslim troops"
