The Half Hour News Hour (vanity)
FreeRepublic | 02-19-07 | Alia

Posted on 02/19/2007 5:29:54 AM PST by Alia

I've checked and seen nothing posted about the premier pilot of the 1/2 Hour News Hour on this forum.

I want more of this show. I laughed throughout.

The satire was crisp, delivery was very good.

The best thing about parodies and satires which grab at one's funny bone is that they are true and factual. The jabs delivered last night were true and factual. And Real.

I and my family enjoyed the 1/2 Hour News very much, and wish it were more than 1/2 hour long -- and covering the range of "news du jour".

How about you?

Oh? Is DU looking at this thread?

Here's a message: You arrogant condescending elitist communist bast*rds can't stand to be made fun of, because you're SOOOOOOO superior (in your own minds). This is just the beginning, get used to it.

Yes that was funny.

I like the show and it should get better with time.

Yes - it was painful to watch. Either it was laughter prompted by one of those "Applause" signs or it was canned laughter.

*I'll* decide when to laugh. Which the "My 17 months in politics" thing was worthy of... There were so many jokes that could have been re-worked to have been funnier, but it seemed like the jokes were run through a committee.

The Shiite Happens T-shirt was hysterical w/abadabadoo on the front. Also the Idi Amin T-shirt was funny and blamed K-12 for not educating the kids for not selling, so he gives anchor a free one. Great gag.

Pray for W and Our Troops

I think it was one of the other threads and not this one as there are about three going on right now, or at least there were earlier. Don't fret though, they will eventually find this one too. LOL

Sigh.

You completely missed IowaHawk's sarcasm.

Which is interesting, because some of the other bloggers who panned the show (IowaHawk lists a few of their reviews under the sarcastic heading "Other Raves") speculate precisely that the writers dumbed it down so as not to alienate the 50-something conservative Mom-and-Pop types who will make up the bulk of the viewership. These are foks who simply do not understand the ultra-sardonic absurdist/sarcastic humor that younger, hipper viewers (like the ones who watch John Stewart's show) breathe like air.

Your inability to detect IowaHawk's sarcasm kind of proves the point. The writers know they can't be subtle because their audience, which is made up of people like you, won't get it. And so the show sucks.

In parting, let me give you an exercise. Reread the following passage from IowaHawk's review and see if you can spot the sarcasm this time around:

Take for example, THHNH's merciless skewering of Barack Obama: when I saw the big payoff punchline that (spoiler alert!) his initials are "B.O.", I fell into such convulsive paroxysms of laughter that I thought my end table would break under the force of my repeated head-smashings. And when they followed that up with a timely zinger about Marion Barry? Let's just say I had to wipe away the tears of laughter while as I punched holes of mirth through my trailer's flimsy masonite walls.

We understand it. We just don't find it funny. Or intelligent. We find it boorish and shallow.

I was puzzled by all the remarks about the laugh track. At the end of the show the camera panned over the audience who were cheering and clapping. At least that's what it looked like to me!

I'm not embarrassed to say I laughed the entire time--especially Barack Obama (B.O.) Magazine and the global warming guy. At least Brittany Spears wasn't responsible for those panty-less shots--it was global warming's fault!

I read your linked item. So? You want PJ O'Rourke humor, ultimately. And?

What I've read is petty and patent jealousy, hardly constructive, or even useful.

Your inability to detect IowaHawk's sarcasm kind of proves the point. The writers know they can't be subtle because their audience, which is made up of people like you, won't get it.

You poor soul, all writ up and no place to show. Have you sent IowaHawk and Ace's writings to Joel or even 24? Up the ante, dude. Don't you believe in healthy competition?

Goodness, anyone who *CAN* actually write this type of show better than Surnow is obviously in no position to do so.

Or is this obvious point over your head?

I am a big fan of Iowahawk, BTW. His humor is very smart and informed. Unlike Jon Stewart's. Or South Park's. I suspect most of it reads funnier than it would act, however.

Still, the producers of the show would be wise to sign Iowahawk on as a consultant or writer.

My husband and I thought that it was great, we really enjoyed it. That's not saying there isn't room for improvement, but some of the skits were just a riot, especially the ACLU ads. All in all, I think that it was a great start.

Well, Alia clearly doesn't understand it.

And actually it is very funny, and very intelligent. IowaHawk is widely recognized as one of the conservative blogosphere's finest parodists. Even the lefty Kos types recognize this. They hate IowaHawk's guts because he skewers them so skillfully. Same deal with John Stewart and that other guy (Coburn?)-- very funny, very intelligent stuff, even if it's left of center.

But at the same time I do recognize that this is all in the eye of the beholder. Different strokes for different folks and all that. The guys who are writing this new Fox show recognize this too. They've chosen to write the show so that it appeals to Mom and Pop, and as a result the show is kind of hamfisted. Naturally Mom and Pop don't see it as hamfisted -- to them it's just funny -- but it's hamfisted to everyone else.

Such is life I guess. We're just going to have to wait until someone produces a conservative comedy tailored to the right demographic (the market will determine the timing) before we're treated to razor sharp, news-hour style lib-baiting on TV.

What you've read is sharp and cutting, and very sarcastic, which is how the game is played these days.

You poor soul, all writ up and no place to show.

What?

Now I don't even know what you're talkin' about, Grandpa.

Goodness, anyone who *CAN* actually write this type of show better than Surnow is obviously in no position to do so.

It's not that people aren't available to write a better show. It's that Fox has chosen not to write a better show because they're afraid that if they did, people like you would be utterly BEFUDDLED by it and wouldn't watch it.

Maybe a good nap would help you to understand.

Well, I agree with the gist of this. However, I don't think the problem is a lack of writing talent so much as a choice by FOX to write the show a certain way.

I only saw the Obama clip on YouTube. That, at least, was unfunny. Garbage, actually. They can't hold the Colbert Report's jock strap, based on that clip.
