F*%k John Warner! I am truly shamed that my senator voted in such a way. Jim Webb, even more of a traitorous Senator, his actions are to be expected since he is openly a member of the enemy within. I will vote against John Warner both in the primary(I'll register Republican to do it), and also in the general election if necessary. He should do VA a favor and retire. Put himself out of our misery!
I'm from VA and at this point I would gladly trade Warner to SC for Graham.
A failure to vote on cloture is a rejection of cloture, just like a no vote.
The reason so many republicans were missing was to make it harder for the Democrats to claim that the cloture vote was in fact a symbolic vote on the resolution.
If every senator showed up and voted, they could point at the result and say "see, everybody expressed their opinion".
I wish more senators on our side had stayed away and not voted, because that's common on a cloture vote.
Whenever you find you are on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. Mark Twain
Gonna play hell overcoming his membership in the gang of 14.Im glad to see that he did vote right on this issue.Maybe the good people of south carolina have been giving him hell in case he wasnt going to vote the right way.
"...McCain, R-Ariz., has derided the Democratic move as political trickery. He backs Bush's plan, and his presence or absence would make no difference in the outcome of the vote. So, he plans to stick to his itinerary of three town hall meetings in Iowa, the early voting state in the primary process."
"It's nothing more than a partisan stunt and an evasion of our responsibilities," McCain told reporters Friday night before a speech in Chicago. "I think it's an insult to the public and our soldiers to pretend we're discharging our responsibilities to them when all we're doing is debating a meaningless, a meaningless resolution."

See #27. McCain was treating the resolution with the contempt it deserved. (I do not like McCain, but he is right on this)
I agree with you on both counts. Dirty Harry purposely scheduled this vote on a Saturday thinking that he might have a better chance of success with many Republicans out of town. He had to get 60 votes FOR cloture. If a Senator is not there to vote, that is just as good as a NO vote.
Let's be real clear, because I think some Freepers don't quite understand. Any Senator who has already been vocal about supporting the President and opposing this resolution needn't have shown up to vote today.
In fact, given that the Dems needed 60 votes for cloture and given that they were never going to get it, not showing up can be viewed as an act of high integrity; for a strong supporter of the war, like Hatch or McCain, to not show up is tantamount to saying, "I won't even add any legitimacy to this farce."
It is funny because it is true. "We don't support the terrorists, but we do support their mission."
You're right on target re showing up for this farce of a debate. It's a shame that so many Freepers don't understand this.
As much as I detest the Dems for pushing this issue, I would cut some of the republicans who voted for it some slack. Maine, for instance, has every Lib/Dem nutcase in the Northeast just salivating for the chance to run for office. Collins opponent the last time around was a bizarre whackpot who would have, had she won, made Chaffee look like Goldwater. Since the pubs knew they had enough votes to block the socialist traitors, it may well be that those who voted for this thing were given the OK to do so on the QT. Let's see how they do on real votes with teeth before we throw them to the sharks.
He scheduled on a Saturday because it would make news.
He dropped ever other resolution, and introduced the house resolution as-is, because that LOOKs like they are making a joint resolution.
He knew they would lose the cloture vote, but set it up so he could call the vote a "symbolic" vote ratifying the house resolution.
Given the shellacking he took Monday, it wasn't a bad move on his part, and it was the best he could do to make it look like everybody was on board with stabbing the troops in the back.
