The cool thing is that it appears that Judge Smith is a conservative. After all, he was the chairman of the Idaho Republican Party for a while and has been heavily involved in the Idaho GOP.
This is President Bush's 7th confirmed appointment to the notoriously liberal and weird 9th Circus. Could we hope to see some more sanity on this court in the foreseeable future? Stay tuned . . .

Well, it's better than nothing. It's a step in the right direction.
If they are all solid conservatives, this is a great accomplishment.

I believe that one of President Bush's most enduring legacies will be his impact on the federal judiciary - and not just on the Supreme Court, either. As it is, he's appointed something like 30% of the total active judges on the Circuit courts. It's very likely that there will be quite a few more confirmed before his presidency ends, in spite of narrow Democratic control.
Good to see a conservative judge get through, but who is Smith replacing? I'm betting it was a conservative or a moderate. Somehow I kinda doubt the Dems would allow this nomination to go through so easily if the judge Smith is replacing was a liberal. I could be wrong of course.
So was Arlen Spectre, let's wait for a more defining moment, maybe a decision or two.
I'm pretty sure this was a replacement to a Reagan appointee who took senior status, which admittedly waters the victory down a bit. But I'd rather be able to rejuvenate the conservative wing on the court than see a liberal Democrat stack the court with lefties.

True. However, I think this guy is also a Mormon as he was born in Utah and educated at Brigham Young University. Interestingly, this is a group the President has appointed from fairly frequently. And why do you suppose? Because Mormons are the probably the most Republican religion in America.
That said, the jury's still out on how good Smith will be. However, I seriously doubt he'll be another Stephen Reinhardt.
One other thing. Apparently, Judge Smith is a longstanding member of the Boy Scouts of America. The liberal fools run from this honorable group these days, so Smith staying with them seems to say something good. Nothing huge, but still important.
Sen. McConn. has said that he hopes to push some 17 jurists through the Senate before Bush is gone. That is good news too and I hope they don't wuss out on that too.
He sounds good. There is not a lot of info on him, but I did see that he was a big supporter of Helen Chenoweth.
26 judges and way too many cases. This circuit definitely needs splitting. Even if it means no new judgeships added.
I wonder why they stopped at 26? Why not make the 9th Circus Court 100 judges - or 1,000? As the court with the worst record and the most liberal judges, sending token conservatives to this vicious jungle is like trying to extinguish the Chicago fire with spit.

While I disagree in the strongest terms with President's Bush support for legalizaing millions of illegal aliens, I think his two (2) appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court were wonderful choices. Harriet Miers, though, was not a good choice.

That's about what Clinton got in 99-00. Look at the circuit level numbers, I think Bush was 1 or 2 higher through 6 years.
Of course, Bush might get a SCOTUS vacancy.
Clinton has 13 judges out of those 26.
