February 15, 2007 -- A BUS carrying a dozen military officers is stopped in broad daylight by a group of police officers, who ask its civilian driver to disembark. Minutes later, a car bomb explodes nearby, shattering the bus and killing the passengers.
Soon, a government spokesman appears on television to blame "terrorists" for an operation that has sent shivers throughout a major city. The spokesman reveals that the attackers' police uniforms had been stolen.
No, this did not happen in Iraq. It happened yesterday in the city of Zahedan, capital of the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan in the Islamic Republic of Iran. And this was not the first incident of its kind.
Since 2002, 75 members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have been killed by assailants in the same region. Last May, in one incident, 23 people, including at least a dozen guardsmen, were killed.
The province has been something of a no-go area for many years, with armed bandits, drug smugglers and dissident tribesmen often clashing with security forces in the rugged mountains. Kidnappings of foreign nationals and the holding of hostages has been a major local industry along with the smuggling of hundreds of thousands of Iranians, mostly young people, who wish to flee to Pakistan or the Persian Gulf states.
Yesterday's incident, however, is different. First, it targeted the regime's elite force. Second, its perpetrators appear to have had inside knowledge about the movements of the military, and access to genuine police uniforms.
For the ruling mullahs in Tehran the shock could not have been greater. The incident confirms their fears that they now have enemies that can use precisely their own tactics against them.

Karma.
Sweet. Let them taste their own hate.
Could be the start of something wonderful.
These people aren't terrorists. They're freedom fighters. Misunderstood freedom fighters. They carry on in the noble tradition, of Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, Hamas, The Qods Force.....
Let's start sending them more explosives!
Wasn't there a story yesterday about Al Queda in Iraq scurrying over to Iran because we are making it uncomfortable for them? Perhaps this bombing was carried out by some of those guys who just can't stop themselves from blowing up things. About 20 incidents like this, and Iran will be too busy with its own problems to screw around with Iraq.
All I can say is it is a good start. Turnabout is fair play. Iran, welcome to the world that you support. Terrorism
Enemy of my enemy..
just as I suspected, an act of Allah
This was VERY similiar to an episode of The Unit a few weeks ago. Looks like the work of Mr. White and Mr. Green to me.
It appears as if Iran is a better candidate to experience a true civil war than Iraq.
You started out right... but these really ARE freedom fighters in the tradition of the Partisans and the Minutemen.
...or Snake Doc and Cool Breeze. Gotta love that show!
I think we should stay out of it and not climb in bed with these criminals; every time we do it comes back to bite us. Besides, that corner of the planet is a clearing house for conventional weapons and these guys have all the dough they need to buy anything they want in any quantity.
Let them kill each other.
This is Iran, not Afghanistan.
Dr. Frankenstein's monster has turned on its creator.
