Culture Warrior (Don't write off Giuliani's appeal to social conservatives)
Wall Street Journal ^ | Februrary 13, 2007 | BRENDAN MINITER

Posted on 02/12/2007 9:43:49 PM PST by RWR8189

The book on Rudy Giuliani is that he is too liberal on social issues to win the Republican presidential nomination. Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, put it succinctly: "I don't see anyone getting the Republican nomination who is not pro-life and a staunch defender of traditional marriage."

But Mr. Giuliani is running strong in Iowa and New Hampshire polls and leading most national surveys of Republicans. He's charming crowds of conservatives everywhere he goes. So it's worth wondering if Mr. Perkins is missing an undercurrent coursing through conservative politics.

Republicans have just experienced a bruising midterm election defeat. The president is suffering dismal approval ratings, and its erstwhile front-runner for the presidential nomination, Sen. John McCain, made his national reputation as a "maverick." The Giuliani rise evident now may be more than name recognition and residual support from his stalwart leadership following the Sept. 11 attacks. Mr. Giuliani's support may also arise from his having successfully moved an entrenched political culture in New York City, something national Republicans have not been able to do in Washington.

"If any cells escaped the prostate wall, you can get cancer some place else, but it won't be prostate cancer."

Prostate cancer is usually very slow growing, and for an older person, often they don't treat it at all. Most real old men have prostate cancer. If your lucky enough to get old, you should be thankful.

I suggest that you do that; you've run out of all you had. Or is THAT a threat?

Those links were just the tip.

You asked me what I'd do. I told you. I never threaten!

I feel like I've entered a preschool by reading this thread...

I've come to the conclusions that,

1. If you like Rudy, you must be a liberal who also likes Hillary, AND
2. If you don't like Rudy, you must be a liberal who wants Hillary to win.

The only thing I can think is that everyone on FR loves Hillary, from reading this thread.

What good conservative state in flyover country would seriously even consider giving Hillary any sort of power?

Voters in the red states cringe at the idea of that wreched wench even getting near the Oval Office again.

My track record is to only support people who believe in the Constitution, and prove it, nopardons. I certainly won't apologize to your ilk for that.

Can you believe in the Constitution and still be pro choice?

Can you believe in the Constitution and still be pro-gay rights?

I'd submit that you can. A true Constitutionalist will think that Roe should be knocked out and the decision left to the state legislatures or that Congress does not have the power to pass certain provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act because it usurps the rights of states to set their own laws on marriage.

Good point. Social conservatives have to ask themselves if they want a President who will appoint strict constructionist judges or if they want a President who will appoint none.

He's charming crowds of conservatives everywhere he goes.

No doubt he's charming. He is AMERICA'S HEROIC MAYOR. He has surely saved many more lives by fighting crime than were lost on 9/11. He told Arafat to go to hell, that alone could charm my socks off. I'd love to meet Giuliani, get his autograph and intoduce him to my kids.

However,
any progress his candidacy makes will only make Duncan Hunter more appealing to me!

Can you be against the 2nd amendment and still believe in the Constitution? The answer is obvious.

Abortion, homosexuality, and gun control laws are still around after 12 years of a Republican Congress.

That's rich. Assault Weapons Ban - allowed to lapse. PBA - banned. Gay Marriage - attempting to get a Constitutional Amendment passed.

Rudy's against all three actions. You just made our point for us.

A vote for Giuliani is a vote to run up the white flag and shut down the conservative movement. The man is a pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, gun grabber, who favors mass immigration and is an open and notorious adulterer as well.

Abortion, gun control, and homosexual behavior were all established policies before Rudy, and no matters who's elected elected they'll continue.

Wow. Talk about surrender.

I don't care what good Giuliani's done (which, compared with his other negative attributes, doesn't amount to much). I'm sorry. His position on the 2nd Amendment and gun control is enough to write him off immediately.

So - according to you - only the criminals were left with guns while crime dropped dramatically.

That is NOT the point.

The point is that Giuliani's gun controlling is unconstitutional. PERIOD. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
