Colo. case prompts academic freedom talk at Cornell (Ithaca defends Ward Churchill)

ITHACA NY--A small group of students and professors gathered this week in A.D. White House at Cornell University to discuss the maelstrom that has erupted over Ward Churchill, a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado who has been subject to academic review and public scrutiny for his comments on the victims of the World Trade Center attacks.

The statements, posted to a blog a day after the attacks and expanded into an essay in 2003, refer to the office workers in the Twin Towers as “little Eichmanns” and called into question the presumption of their innocence.

“True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break,” Churchill wrote. “They formed a technocratic corps at the very heart of America's global financial empire.”

Cornell Professor Eric Cheyfitz, who testified before a review board at the University of Colorado in defense of Churchill, led a discussion that shifted alternately between academic freedom and the particular allegations levied against Churchill, whose dismissal a university hearing board has recommended.

supporters of the professor see the investigation as a politically motivated and unfair examination of Churchill's scholarship...

Cheyfitz said that the only member of the review board with any expertise in Churchill's area had long-standing academic disagreements with Churchill, which might have skewed the findings of the board.

Most of the discussion about the controversy at Cornell focused on the particulars of the case, but at times broadened scope to consider general issues of academic freedom. Cheyfitz said that 60 percent of the positions in major disciplines are not tenure track and cited what he called the increasingly “corporate structure of the university.”

Liberal academia is backsliding into the swamp of history -- once the world wakes up to what these anti-American socialists are about, they won't see much tuition money any more....

Video: Churchill advocates killing of Military Officers

Churchill: "Fragging an officer has a much more impactful effect"

Ward Churchill has made some more despicable comments. This time, he is advocating military personnel to "roll a grenade under their line officer."

Churchill: "For those of you who do, as a matter of principle, oppose war in any form, the idea of supporting a conscientious objector who's already been inducted in his combat service in Iraq might have a certain appeal.

But let me ask you this: Would you render the same level of support to someone who hadn't conscientiously objected, but rather instead rolled a grenade under their line officer in order to neutralize the combat capacity of their unit?"

"...Conscientious objection removes a given piece of cannon fodder from the fray. Fragging an officer has a much more impactful effect."

- Ward Churchill, Portland, Oregon- 6/23/05

Too bad they forget to mention that the real issue here in CO was about PLAGARISM.

Ithaca twits ignore the FACT that Churchill's problems with CU are about incompetent, mendacious, fraudulent pseudo- "scholarship" over many years. His work received the kind of critical scrutiny it should have received many years ago because of his vicious and depraved comments about 9/11 victims, but his academic fraud is what became the issue on Colorado.

Leftists always change the subject and/or distort the real issues when they cannot win an argument (which is all the time).

TO borrow someone's tagline

Ward Churchill is a fake Indian, a fake scholar, and makes fake art ( if you want to call what he makes art).

I find it amazing that a pseudo-Indian who is holding down a job that should have been awarded to a real native American, and who plagiarizes the artwork of other artists and passes it off as his own, is still garnering support in the academic community.

Cheyfitz said that 60 percent of the positions in major disciplines are not tenure track and cited what he called the increasingly “corporate structure of the university.” Why would a university want to get saddled with these blazing incomptents for life. Better to just make them adjuncts and then you can fire them without cause. But notice that this cheyfitz clown is not a hard science professor. But Cornell is stuck with this fool until he retires

Seems a shame that with the many competent, highly-qualified Native Americans WITH tribal membership AND advanced degrees in liberal arts disciplines, that universities don't hire some of them to teach American Indian literature and law - instead of pseudo-Indians like Ward Churchill. JMO.

I am a Cornell alumni and don't remember this nitwit.

Ward Churchill is not the first of this type of idiot. I know personally, another professor who taught at Pennsylvania's Edinboro University who played the Native American thing to the hilt. He was dark complexioned, and had dark hair and had the certain look about him where he was able to pass himself off. He was German and English.

Sad to see that this is what passes as informed discussion at the school of Cornell.

Because he is a liberal. Better yet, he is an unabashed radical left-wing anti-American socialist from an "oppressed minority" (kinda).

No wonder they love him in the halls of academe.

Cornell and all of the Ivy League schools are first rate when it comes to a hard science (physics, math, chem, engineering) education. It's when you leave the science buildings, that things got dicey and full of self absorbed idiots like this Cheyfitz character. He thinks that because he's teaching at Cornell that he's a somebody. Problem is he's teaching a course(s) that pretty much anyone with a reasonable command of english could teach. The Physics Dept. at Cornell was excellent. Head and shoulders above the school that I transferred in from (Clarkson).
