WASHINGTON - Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee expressed skepticism Tuesday over rival Mitt Romneys assertion that prior to 2004, he hadnt given a lot of thought to when life began.
Im not going to say whether I believe it or not, Huckabee told The Examiner. I would find it very difficult to think that any person whos been in elected politics on either the Democratic or Republican side had not sat down and thought through that issue very, very carefully, because its one that is a defining issue for so many of us, particularly in the Republican Party more so perhaps than the Democratic Party.
Unlike Huckabee, a former Baptist pastor and Arkansas governor who has always been anti-abortion, Romney changed his position on abortion from favoring abortion rights to anti-abortion after grappling with a stem cell research bill when he was governor of Massachusetts.
I hadnt given a lot of thought to when life began I have to be honest with you until this whole stem cell research matter came to the fore in our state and this bill came to my desk, Romney told an audience of conservatives in Washington on Jan. 27.
Yet Romney, 59, had addressed the issue of abortion in political campaigns dating back to 1996, when he tried to unseat Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and in 2002, when he ran for governor.
Romneys spokesman said Tuesday that the issue did not truly hit home until 2004.
Governor Romney was never a career politician, explained Kevin Madden, spokesman for Romneys presidential exploratory committee. His life before politics was spent building a business and raising a family. But, Governor Romney, when confronted with this issue as governor, has always sided with life and the protection of life.
Nice thought but Cheney has about as much chance of winning as I do.
Oh, I disagree. Cheney'd have a good chance of winning. He's just not going to run.
Well he has a better chance of winning than anyone else the GOP has to offer.
Of course, if you have a better candidate, don't be bashful.
Not fond of Romney,
But ANYONE but Rudy, please!!!!!!
At least Romney is anti illegal amnesty --- and Huckabee is for it. Is it just me or do the pundits never mention illegals when discussing prez candidates?
I'd love to see that ... maybe I'll write an alternate-history novel on the theme :-).
"He's just not going to run."
Well you better hope he does,
'cause if he doesn't we can expect a 'Rat presidency in 2009.
---"God: "I will grant your wish. The GOP nominee will be... Michael Bloomberg."---
LOL
Great. First the Cubs, now this?
Cheney/Steele 2008
&&
Ah, that would be a ticket to make me swoon. I love both of those guys.
If you are a Freeper supporting Duncan Hunter please make your voice heard in this poll!!!
Have you seen his approvals lately? There worse than GWs All on the left and many on the right are "Bush fatigued" so a change is inevitable.
Personally I like Cheney even more than Bush but there is no way on earth he could win the Presidential election.
I think Romney has the best shot right now and I'm not alone as Ann Coulter, Pete Hoekstra, Jay Sekalau(sp)agree. I refuse to consider either McCain or Rudy.
"Have you seen his approvals lately?"
The only polls I pay attention to are election day votes.
politics is checkers not chess...
let us all know when Hunter wins a statewide election.
So your behind the "best shot"?? When the only announced true Conservative is there looking for your support?
Bottom line, I will support the most conservative person who could realistically be elected.
In an ideal world Newt would have a realistic chance of winning and would support him completely but unfortunately I don't think at this time and place in history he would have a snowballs chance either.
I don't see why a flip-flopping RINO one-term governor of Massachusetts should be taken any more seriously as a presidential candidate than a longtime Congressman and former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee or a multi-term governor of Arkansas (or for that matter a one-term senator from Illinois). I think the elevation of Romney to the top-tier (along with McEgo and uber-RINO Guiliani) is just a creation of the media (which I hope doesn't last).
No problem. Same for Cheney now ya' hear?
