Health officials warn of new HIV threat found in King County (Seattle)
The Seattle Times ^ | Feb. 2, 2007 | Warren King

Four men in King County have been diagnosed with a strain of HIV that is extremely hard to treat, and health officials are concerned it could spread further.

At least two types of HIV drugs don't work against the strain, and another type has limited effectiveness, officials from Public Health — Seattle & King County said Thursday.

"It's conceivable there can be more infections, and the gay community is at highest risk," said Dr. Bob Wood, the HIV/AIDS program director for Public Health.

All the men were diagnosed with the strain as soon as they tested positive for the virus — unlike other HIV patients who develop drug resistance over time, often from taking medications inconsistently, Wood said. But there is no evidence the strain is rapidly spreading.

The four known cases were found over the course of more than a year. These were the only such cases reported in the state.

Wood said all of the infected men are gay and have had multiple partners, most anonymous. They also used methamphetamine, which tends to increase sexual activity.

Quarantine sought for harsh TB strain

I am sure they wouldn't possibly consider the same in the case of virulent, untreatable HIV infections. It's PC to quarantine people with TB, but not PC to do the same with HIV/AIDS, even though it's just as deadly, and even though these infected men seem to spread it all over the place to multiple partners, who then spread if further, etc.

Quelle surprise! So presumably, we're supposed to be sympathetic and throw yet more millions at the problem...

"I am sure they wouldn't possibly consider the same in the case of virulent, untreatable HIV infections."

TB is easily spread, quarantines make sense because there are no reasonable precautions when it is present in your area. To the contrary. it is easy to reduce your chance of catching HIV to practically zero with minimal effort.

Unless you planning on putting yourself in a position to catch this new strain of HIV from these guys then you should have nothing to worry about.

What I don't understand is why the homosexual community aren't demanding quarantines, since they are the ones most at risk and could save thousands of lives, and could have saved tens of thousands of lives, if the early HIV infected people had been quarantined to contain the disease, when it was first discovered.

How many billion dollars must the taxpayers pony up to support the lifestyle choices of these mutts?

Actually it's logical to quarantine people with TB since it is airborne and easy to catch socially.

HIV/AIDs on the other hand is difficult to contract, unless you are sharing needles or having sex with an infected person.

These infected people clearly aren't acting responsibly, and basically killing others. As I said, one would think the gay community would be upset, instead of support the killing of their own.

You're in good company with this idea..only Castro has tried quarantining those who are HIV+, and EVEN HE realize he was wrong and changed his mind.

He**, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) didn't close bathhouses or quarantine patients the first time around, nor did they require reports be sent to sexual partners (as they did for other STDs). Why would anyone expect the "gay community" to police their own if the government entity responsible for identifying and tracking disease outbreaks never did?

So irresponsible behavior comes with an increased risk of death. Can't say I'm too shocked.

"As I said, one would think the gay community would be upset, instead of support the killing of their own."

Where did you see anyone support the killing of their own? Are we reading the same article?

"It's conceivable there can be more infections, and the gay community is at highest risk," ...

But ... but ... how can this be? Supposedly we are all equally at risk for the virus ... that is the line that the gay supporters feed us continuously in order to pump up AIDS research funding.

"Wood said all of the infected men are gay and have had multiple partners, most anonymous."

Yep, that information blitz and handing out condoms is really working. Fact is, these guys don't give a damn about whether or not they are going to get sick as long as they get a deviant sexual fix whenever needed.

Maybe because a high percentage of that "community" would find themselves quarantined?

I'm not sure how true it is, but I heard that when aids first started President Reagan thought the Gays with aids should have "AIDS" tattooed on their butt.

I am aware ... and I am also aware that I am at zero risk of HIV/AIDS due to my behavior. Does the CDC report that, in this country, we are all equally at risk for HIV/AIDS? No.
