THE Eiffel Tower's lights will be turned off for five minutes on Friday as part of a campaign to save energy and draw attention to the plight of the planet.

The agency that manages the Paris landmark said today that it will be joining a campaign to draw attention to "sustainable development and the preservation of the planet" with the five-minute blackout at 5.55am AEDT.

The campaign called Five Minutes of Respite for the Planet is being held as world experts meet in Paris to thrash out a report on global warming.

The Eiffel Tower has recently changed its lighting system to reduce energy consumption by 30 per cent, according to the SETE agency that manages it.

It has also sought to tap into renewable sources of energy.

They're trying to get the whole country to do this. I hope they succeed.

The Eiffel Tower is the quintessential monument to human ingenuity, progress, and its embodiment in the Industrial Revolution. Why are they pussy-footing around by turning off the lights, when they could be making a much more powerful and dramatic and symbolic statement of their true anti-human-progress worldview by tearing down the tower and recycling the metal into, um, plowshares... Anything less is hypocrisy of the highest order...

Eiffel Tower is overdone. It has no mystique at all in person. Just a lot of iron. IMHO anyway. :o) However I must say the fireworks display there at the Millennium(?) were the best.

Eiffel didn't design his tower planning for it to be lit up at night time. Why don't the French just turn off the lights permanently (except for the flashing light that warns planes/helicopters)?!

You're right - I remember Sydney Harbour was great....I think it was the surprise that Paris even did a light show. :o) And I've seen better light show in the US than we did on that particular date. Again, IMO

There's going to come the day when those burning cars will be new energy sources for the French, mark my words!

Five minutes?

Turn the Eiffel Tower into a giant wind turbine.

Yeah, but when the French saw and heard those fireworks, they surrendered in droves.

The lights are out on all those attending the meeting. They won't even recognize the lights out on the Tower.

There is a public appeal on the internet to the French who don't believe in "global warming" to keep their lights on while the others shut down their own.
By the way, if you believe in "global warming", I happen to be the owner of the Eiffel tower and I could sell it to you at a reasonable price.

They can turn them out forever for all I care. The Eiffel tower is just an amusement park ride they never took down.
