New governors from California to New Jersey have cut spending and reordered priorities in recent years in an attempt to get their states on a path toward stability and prosperity. People were uncomfortable with these actions at first, but later saw that change was necessary and beneficial. We must do the same thing in New York, but it will be harder than in other states because we've put off tough decisions for years. Our budgeting often has been driven by politics instead of common sense. We've made commitments that drive billions of dollars into ineffective programs that benefit the few at the expense of the many.
Nowhere is that more apparent than in education and health care, where we spend far more than any other state and yet have poor results.
All of that is about to change. In my Executive Budget next week, I will propose a fundamental restructuring of New York's finances. We will drive more resources to needy schools that promise higher standards and greater accountability. And we will end special subsidies to entrenched interests in the health care industry so we can fund health insurance coverage for all children and make other investments that will help provide better care at lower cost.
Children are the future of this state, and our children's education and health care are where we should be investing. That's only common sense, but powerful interests will oppose this effort and do everything possible to protect the status quo.
Others will agree with our goals, but balk at making the tough decisions. They'll want to spend more on everything. The only way to do that, however, is by raising taxes, which New York simply cannot afford to do.
While I'm interested in working with all concerned to ensure that we're acting in the most intelligent and well-conceived manner, I am going to insist on fundamental change.
We can do better for our children, and we can turn around our state - but we must first summon the courage and will to make the tough decisions that have been delayed too long. I was elected by the people to lead this process, and that's what I intend to do.
In other words:
Teachers Unions and the nepotism from newly elected Democrat politicians will receive more to do less and the remaining health care companies in New York are going to leave.
When you elect filthy Marxists like Spitzer or Patrick as your governor you must understand that there will be consequences.
I sure as heck didn't elect Spitzer. The depressing thing is that we are not even three months out of the election, and I can't remember the name of the guy that I voted for.
No, you must be wrong! Eliot Spitzer says NJ, having "cut spending and reordered priorities" is moving toward "stability and prosperity" -- who are ya gonna believe? Eliot Spitzer or your lyin' eyes??? LOL!
BTW, he doesn't give many (any?) specifics on his "new" health plan, but I gather a number of these highly touted new health care "solutions" in various states are on a collision course with ERISA.
Rest assured that when I said "you" I was using the plural not the singular.New York,Massachusetts and,I'll wager, other states are truly (bleeped) for having elected Marxist slime as governor.
Here in Massachusetts we can only hope that Teddy's liver gives out or that Kerry is killed in a windsurfing accident so that Patrick can take that seat...which,it's said,is Patrick's true ambition.
From each according to his ability...
To each [union/special interest group] according to his ability to deliver votes/election money.
so he really can't be trusted on any other important issues.
Congrats, Empire State. You now have Frank (Enforcer) Nitti for Governor.
Didn't his conduct as Atty Gen set off any alarms at all?
>>...we can fund health insurance coverage...<<
Maybe if they didn't fund it at all and, say, left it up to the individual to purchase what they could afford, they would save a bundle of wasted money on "common cold" visits...
Love your tagline. Had not read that quote before.
I don't like Spitzer, but I'm impressed that he's ruled out raising taxes. That's rare for a D.
HA!
Unless he calls them something else and then raises them...
Don't feel bad. We in PA are still waiting for Ed Rendell's promised property tax cut (Fast Eddie is now in his 2nd term). Unfortunately we also had some Freepers who felt that a relected Ed Rendell was preferable to Lynn Swann.
And leftist RATS like Spitzer never,*ever* lie.
If you think he's telling the truth, I've got a bridge to sell you.
"Comrade spitzer is a TYPICAL gun-grabbing northeastern inner-city liberal cut from the same cloth as bloomberg, schumer, and giuliani.."
But Giuliani has an "R" by his name, so we should all vote for him!
